Texas falls in game one to South Carolina, 9-1

by: Justin Nash04/03/26

Today just wasn’t Texas’ day. Ruger Riojas had his worst outing of the season, and Texas was unable to bring in any runners it managed to get onto the basepaths. There is still the chance to take the series and the Horns will need to respond tomorrow and Saturday after losing 9-1 to the South Carolina Gamecocks in Columbia.

This game got out of hand early with five base hits to the left side of the field in the early few innings. Four of them were to left field for extra bases. Riojas saw his sub 2.00 ERA balloon to 3.74. He only struck out four batters to two walks. Simply put it just wasn’t his day.

Brody Walls came in to relieve him and offered up some solid pitching in his 3.0 innings, allowing only two earned runs on a homer to left field. He was hammering the strike zone and looked like another pitcher Texas could trust coming out of the ‘pen late in the season.

The Texas offense couldn’t get much going, with the only run coming off of a 3rd inning blast from Aiden Robbins. The top and bottom of the lineup went hitless today, striking out 12 times to just 3 walks as a team. There was some good contact at times, but the ball found the fielders with ease.

Texas will need to shake off the loss and show up tomorrow with an opening day mindset with the series still able to be taken. Losses like this happen in baseball, it’s all about how the team moves on past it. South Carolina had played some good baseball since the firing of Paul Mainieri, and it certainly showed tonight.

First pitch Friday is at 6 p.m.
