Crimson Countdown: No. 42 Wyatt Gilmore
The Crimson Countdown is officially on for the 2025 Oklahoma football season. Everybody wants to forget about 2024 and move forward.
Head coach Brent Venables and staff have attempted to do that. New face calling the offense (Ben Arbuckle). Venables calling the defense, it’s now or never for this regime at OU in the SEC. No beating around the bush.
Every day as we get closer to kickoff, SoonerScoop.com will count down the days with you. Starting with No. 99 and working our way to No. 0, we’ll be there every step of the way.
Crimson Countdown: No. 42 Wyatt Gilmore
2024 stats: Played in the season opener against Temple.
2025 outlook:
For the Sooners at defensive end in 2025, if someone is going to come out of nowhere, they’ll have to come and take it. Oklahoma has experience and depth at the position but they also have some talented youngsters who could be ready to jump the line a bit.

Gilmore isn’t always discussed as one of those guys but at 6-foot-4 and 265-pound he’s a sturdy EDGE player for Oklahoma who can develop and have a role for the Sooners.
To expect a starting role seems far too much with experience like Marvin Jones Jr., and more veteran players like P.J. Adebawore and Taylor Wein in front of him. But the chance to have a role and be a guy who gets snaps seems a reasonable hope for the young EDGE.
2025 defensive end outlook
You know OU has a superstar on its hands in R Mason Thomas. And you know OU has some young guys looking to make a splash. The big thing? Sooners have to find that second guy to go with Thomas. There are a lot of candidates, but no easy favorite as we hit the summer. Miguel Chavis has done a nice job of building up the room. Now, though, everybody needs to go to that next level. It cannot be about being raw and having potential in 2025. This season must be about the production that is coming along with everything.
