No. 24 Nebraska's second-half surge falls short, loses to Wisconsin 63-60

No. 24 Nebraska Women’s Basketball (14-5, 3-5) lost its second straight game by three points or less. Wisconsin (13-7, 5-4) took down the Huskers 63-60 in the Kohl Center in Madison, Wis. The Huskers generally outplayed Wisconsin in the second half, outscoring them 35-25, but came up short down the stretch.

The Huskers were paced by Amiah Hargrove for the second straight game. She had 15 points and five rebounds. Eliza Maupin had her second double-double as a Husker with 13 points and a team-high 13 rebounds.

Nebraska shot 37% from the field. The Huskers were 5-of-15 from beyond the arc. UW shot 45% from field-goal range, 33% from three and 78% from the free-throw line.

Gift Uchenna put together her best game as a Badger against Nebraska. She had a season-high 22 points and 14 rebounds. Uchenna surpassed her previous season high of 14 with 18 points before halftime. Kyrah Daniels posted 19 points and eight rebounds.

The Badgers were plagued by 22 turnovers, giving up 17 steals. Nebraska capitalized with 18 points off turnovers. Wisconsin won the rebound battle, outrebounding NU 45-26.


Uchenna, rebounding massive problem for Huskers

Uchenna was a massive problem for the Huskers in the first half. She had 10 points and six rebounds in seven minutes. She went 5-of-8 in quarter one. Uchenna had 18 of Wisconsin’s 38 first-half points. She had a season-high 18 points before halftime.

Maupin and Hargrove paced Nebraska in the first quarter. Hargrove had six points, one rebound and was 3-of-4 from the field. She had 10 first-half points. Maupin recorded five points, three rebounds and one assist.

The Huskers took a 15-12 lead with under two minutes left in the quarter. However, Steele hit the first 3-pointer of the game and then drove in for a layup. Wisconsin led 17-15 after the second quarter.

Nebraska, a team known for its great 3-point shooting, struggled significantly from behind the line. Prince was the first Husker to drain a three with 4:11 left in the second quarter to cut the Badgers’ lead to 26-22. NU was 1-of-11 from behind the arc in the first half.

Wisconsin absolutely embarrassed Nebraska on the glass to lead 38-25 at halftime. They outrebounded the Huskers 26-10 in the first half. After eight first-quarter rebounds, NU rebounded just two rebounds in the second quarter while UW had 14.

The Badgers had 11 offensive rebounds compared to Nebraska’s two. Wisconsin scored 15 second-chance points before the break.


Husker scoring surge falls short

The Huskers got a much-needed fresh start in the second half. They started the third quarter on a 9-2 scoring run to cut Wisconsin’s lead to 40-34. Nebraska had a 10-0 run later in the quarter as well.

They outscored the Badgers 22-7 in the third quarter. The Huskers shot 54% from the field and 57% from behind the arc in the third. Wisconsin had nine turnovers, which NU turned into five points in quarter three.

Uchenna went quiet in the third quarter. She didn’t score but had three rebounds. In the fourth, she had four points.

Ronnie Porter opened the fourth quarter with a 3-pointer. But Nebraska scored the next seven points to take a 54-48 lead. Wisconsin went scoreless for three minutes until Daniels made a layup and the and-one to make it 54-51 with 6:17 left.

The Huskers had a field-goal drought themselves. They didn’t score a field goal for nearly four minutes in the middle of the fourth. Maupin ended the drought with a layup. Prince was the next Husker to score, taking a 60-57 lead with 2:12 left. Daniels drained a three to tie the game 60-60 with 1:54 remaining.

Daniels gave UW a one-point lead with a free throw. Maupin captured the rebound after Daniels missed the second free throw. Uchenna scored a layup to go up 63-60 with 53 seconds left.

Nebraska had a couple of opportunities to score but couldn’t get the job done.

Next up, the Huskers face Illinois on Saturday, Jan. 24 at 1 p.m. CT at Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln, Neb.
