Michigan State receives commitment from 2025 Texas safety Evan Young
Michigan State received an important class of 2025 commitment Monday evening when it landed Lufkin (Texas) High School safety Evan Young. Young announced his commitment via social media. Young took in the Spartans’ loss to Rutgers this past weekend during an official visit.
The timing of Young’s commitment is important, as SpartanMag’s Jim Comparoni reported on Monday that Michigan State will lose cornerbacks coach Demetrice Martin to UCLA. Spartan secondary coach Blue Adams is recruiting Young as a safety, but he’s a significant pickup nonetheless, with Michigan State’s defensive back class in jeopardy.

Michigan State lost a commitment from three-star California cornerback LaRue Zamorano on Monday as a result of Martin’s departure. The Spartans hold additional commitments from three-star Virginia cornerback Terrance Edwards and three-star Florida safety George Mullins. Both reaffirmed their Michigan State commitments with SpartanMag on Monday.
Three-star Maryland cornerback Aydan West remains a member of Michigan State’s 2025 class, though Ohio State continues to make a strong push for his services. West also received an offer from UCLA late last month. Martin’s move could impact West’s final decision.

As for Young, the Spartans offered him back in October. Young has developed strong relationships with Adams and defensive director of player personnel Austin D’Armond.
“Man, it was great,” Young told SpartanMag after his official visit. “The people, the coaches and the players, they have a positive attitude about their season, and I believe coach (Jonathan) Smith can change things with time.”
The On3 Industry Rankings have yet to rank the 6-foot-1, 180-pound Young. He demonstrated strong ball skills and good range on his senior film, thanks to his long wingspan. Young will sign with the Spartans on Wednesday.
