Ross Hodge post game summary: Kansas State
West Virginia head coach Ross Hodge discussed the 59-54 win over Kansas State and WVSports.com provides a summary of what was said.
–Hodge said that the exact adjective he used was gross before the game. You don’t always know but the trip back, the weather was bad and you condensed your routine on Sunday and Monday to the middle of the day and the guys put a lot of external work in and that was negated on a lot of levels. Kansas State has been close in a lot of games and their record isn’t indicative of what they’ve been. He had a feel this one could be a grind and it’s such a good league and the residual impact is there so he knew it would be a battle and it was. This might be Hodge’s favorite win as a group because of what it took collectively and from a belief standpoint to get off to that bad of a start and have sloppy stretches of play but keep fighting and believing that’s the mark of a good team.
–Hodge said it’s easy as a coach to look at what you did or what you do, but far often you don’t give the other team credit. Kansas State did a good job and their guards were big and physical and they gapped them and kept them out of paint. West Virginia couldn’t drive the ball and they didn’t make simple plays. The play of the game was Treysen Eaglestaff‘s offensive rebound and and-one. That’s a sign of his growth and he is learning how to win.
—Jasper Floyd showed a lot of discipline at the end of the play on the defensive end on PJ Haggerty. You can’t deviate from the plan or he will live a the line. Floyd has the size, physicality and the smarts.
–It’s easy as a player or a coach or a fan it’s easy to cash it in and say it’s not your night, but you can never have that mindset. Maybe you’ll run out of time but Brenen Lorient did a good job handling the foul trouble and finished with 10 points and 6 rebounds and some big ones on the offensive end.
–West Virginia will enjoy this one tonight but have another difficult matchup this weekend.
–Hodge thanked everybody that came tonight and made it happen. He is very thankful and they showed up.
