Texas Tech has picked up another player out of the transfer portal, adding to the nations No. 1 class per the On3 2026 College Football Team Transfer Portal Rankings.

The latest commitment comes from former Tulsa quarterback Kirk Francis. Francis visited Lubbock on January 8th, and announced his pledge to the Red Raiders just a few days later.

Texas Tech was looking for veteran quarterback depth after Mitch Griffis went to East Carolina, and they found that in the 6-foot-1, 200 pound Francis.

Over three seasons as a Golden Hurricane, Francis appeared in 18 games, starting 12 of them. For his career he has completed 270-of-462 passing attempts (58.4%) for 3,045 passing yards, 18 passing touchdowns and 13 interceptions.

His most extensive action came during his redshirt freshman season in 2024, when he started seven games and played 475 snaps. His best season, per Pro Football Focus, came as a true freshman when in 245 snaps he finished the season with a grade of 82.4.

Per On3, Francis is rated as an 84 grade three-star transfer and the No. 147 quarterback in the portal.

Francis initially joined the Golden Hurricane as a walk-on out of Metro Christian Academy in Tulsa, Oklahoma as part of the 2023 class.

With Texas Tech adding five-star quarterback Brendan Sorsby earlier this off-season, Francis will compete with Lloyd Jones III, Stephen Cannon, Holden Phillips and – when healthy enough to return to game action – Will Hammond for the primary backup job behind Sorsby.

Francis will arrive in Lubbock with two seasons of eligibility remaining.
