South Carolina soccer legend retiring after successful professional career

On Tuesday, South Carolina soccer legend Brad Guzan announced his upcoming retirement. The former Gamecock star has played professionally for over 20 years but will hang up his cleats soon. According to a social media announcement, the 2025 season will be the goalkeeper’s last. That means that Saturday’s contest between his Atlanta United team and DC United will be his final time on the pitch as a pro.

Guzan spent two years at the University of South Carolina. Despite splitting his high school career between playing goal and playing in the field, Guzan became an elite keeper with the Gamecocks. As a sophomore, he earned All-American honors. He also helped guide USC to the NCAA Tournament in 2004.

Following his Gamecock career, Guzan was the second pick of the 2005 MLS SuperDraft. He played with Chivas USA and Atlanta United in the MLS and spent time with Aston Villa, Hull City, and Middlesbrough in England. In 2007, he was the MLS Goalkeeper of the Year. Guzan was also an MLS All-Star twice.

Guzan played internationally for the United States Men’s National Team from 2006-2021. He made 64 appearances for Team USA and was part of three Gold Cup title-winning teams. Guzan was the Golden Glove winner at the 2017 Gold Cup and was part of two American World Cup teams.
