South Carolina football gets Good Friday gift of quarterback commitment
South Carolina football identified its top target at the quarterback position and has now secured a commitment. On Friday, Waxahachie (TX) QB prospect Jerry Meyer III announced his pledge to the Gamecocks.
Meyer’s connection with offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Kendal Briles was a major factor in this one.
“Coach Briles was a big part of this decision,” Meyer told Sam Spiegelman of Rivals. “I have a great relationship with him, and he has my trust. I’m also thankful for the rest of the staff and the relationship being established there.”
Meyer had committed to Briles previously when the long-time assistant was the OC at TCU. Following Briles’ exit from Fort Worth and a quick USC offer, he backed off his commitment to the Horned Frogs.
The Gamecocks and Briles pushed for Meyer, beating out Houston, Arkansas, Mississippi State, Baylor, and SMU for his services. GamecockCentral’s Chris Clark reported earlier this week that things were looking good between Carolina and Meyer. Now, Briles has his quarterback for the 2027 cycle.
“I think just the overall program and how it’s being run, the coaches behind it all and the relationships that have been built just made it feel right,” Meyer told Spiegleman. “I think the most exciting part is being able to progress at a high level with great coaches who will push me to get where I want to be.”

The Insiders Forum: Discuss South Carolina football!
Meyer, who is 6-feet tall and 190 pounds, is a confident thrower of the football and a capable athlete. Making him a strong fit with Briles, he has experience running an up-tempo offense that utilizes RPO principles.
As a freshman, Meyer set state records in Nevada on a state championship team at Lake Mead Christian Academy. After making the move to the Lone Star State, he continued to develop. He is a “gamer” who displays toughness and a high football IQ on film. He can also make the majority of throws and possesses a quick release.
According to the Rivals Industry Ranking, Meyer is the No. 910 overall player in the class of 2027. He is also No. 56 nationally among all quarterbacks in the cycle. Meyer ranks No. 110, regardless of position, in the loaded state of Texas.
Rivals is a bit higher on Meyer. In the 2027 hierarchy, he ranks as the No. 47 quarterback and No. 88 player in Texas.
