Penn State wrestling injuries, finalists, and those still alive headline US Open Day 1 takeaways

Penn State wrestlers past and present are at the US Open this weekend, vying for a spot at Final X. Eight of them still have a shot to get there. The rest, including current Lions William Henckel, Connor and Cole Mirasola, Nate Desmond, and Joe Sealey, among others, are in the consolation bracket.

The Nittany Lions are represented in the senior men’s freestyle division by 13 current members of the team. Below, we’ll be tracking their progress in addition to how some former members of the program are doing in Las Vegas. Lilledahl, Dake, Blaze into finals; Kasak, Barr, Welsh drop their semis

The NLWC went 3-3 in the semifinal round of the US Open. Luke Lilledahl (57 kilograms), Marcus Blaze (61), and Kyle Dake (86) are all in tomorrow’s finals. But, three others, Tyler Kasak (70 kilograms), Rocco Welsh (86), and Josh Barr (92) dropped their semifinal bouts. And, Kasak was forced to medically default with an upper body injury, while Barr fought through his match while clearly favoring his right knee for more than half of the six minute contest.

Josh Barr, clearly bothered by a right knee issue from the first period, falls to Michael Macchiavello by decision, 4-1, in one 92-kilogram semifinal. The Nittany Lion was in clear discomfort leaving the mat.

There will be no all-NLWC final at 86 kilograms

In the first 86-kilogram semifinal to finish, top-seeded NLWC wrestler Kyle Dake beat Aeoden Sinclair by decision, 6-1, to move into tomorrow’s final. But, there won’t be an all NLWC final as Parker Keckeisen beat Rocco Welsh in the other semi 11-4. The former UNI wrestler led 7-4 in the second period and used a late four-point throw to secure the win. It’ll be Dake/Keckeisen in tomorrow’s final.

Luke Lilledahl beat Liam Cronin by technical fall, 10-0, to punch his ticket to the finals opposite Spencer Lee at 57 kilograms. At 61 kilograms, Marcus Blaze beat Seth Gross by decision, 6-1, to earn a date with Ben Davino in that weight class’s final. And, at 70 kilograms, Tyler Kasak was forced to injury default his semifinal against Caleb Henson after suffering an upper body injury in the first period.

Despite leading Virginia Tech’s Caleb Henson 1-0 in one 70-kilogram semifinal, Penn State’s Tyler Kasak was forced to medically forfeit the match nearly midway through. The nature of the injury is unclear, though he grabbed at his face before going down to the mat, and it wasn’t the first time in this tournament. Henson will face Ridge Lovett in tomorrow’s final.

Penn State’s Marcus Blaze will face a familiar foe, Ohio State’s Ben Davino, in tomorrow’s 61-kilogram US Open final. The Nittany Lion beat Seth Gross of Wisconsin RTC by decision, 6-1, on the strength of three takedowns.

Luke Lilledahl beat Liam Cronin by technical fall, 10-0, in 3:52 to advance to the 57-kilogram finals at the US Open. He’ll face reigning World team member Spencer Lee, who pinned his opponent in the other semifinal. The Nittany Lion used five takedowns to earn the early stoppage.

Penn State wrestler Rocco Welsh is into the 86-kilogram semifinals after taking out former Virginia Tech wrestler Mekhi Lewis by decision, 5-1.

Penn State connections who are now in the semifinals, which start at 7 p.m. ET tonight, include Luke Lilledahl (57 kilograms), Marcus Blaze (61), Beau Bartlett (65), Tyler Kasak (70), and Kyle Dake (86) with a few more left to wrestle in the quarterfinal round.

Tyler Kasak gutted his way through a 7-6 decision over former N.C. State All-American Ed Scott by decision, 7-6. The Nittany Lion needed numerous medical stoppages during the 70-kilogram quarter to deal with a bloody nose. He is into the semifinals, where he’ll face Virginia Tech’s Caleb Henson, who redshirted during the 2025-2026 college season after winning a 149-pound NCAA title the year before.

Kasak joins Beau Bartlett, who took out Vito Arujau, Marcus Blaze, Kyle Dake, who beat Cade DeVos by decision, 3-0, and Luke Lilledahl as the Penn State connections to make tonight’s semifinal round so far.

In other news, Evan Wick took out William Henckel in a 79-kilogram quarter, by decision, 5-4 sending him to the consolation bracket.
