Former Penn State commit Julian Peterson now headed to North Carolina

Former Penn State cornerback commit and New Jersey native Julian Peterson has found his next school.

On Wednesday morning, the Winslow Township prospect confirmed with Blue White Illustrated that he’ll head to North Carolina to play for Bill Belichick and his staff next season. The 6-foot-2, 180-pound senior is the third former PSU defensive back to commit to the Tar Heels, joining Pittsburgh native David Davis and Virginia native Jaziel Hart. Peterson’s high school teammate, Nyqir Helton, is also committed to UNC.

Back in January, when Peterson committed to Penn State, he chose the Nittany Lions over Georgia following multiple trips to both State College and Athens. After opening up his recruitment, Peterson took official visits to North Carolina, Wisconsin and Clemson.

Peterson is ranked No. 611 nationally in the Industry Rankings. He’s the 58th-ranked cornerback and No. 9 overall in New Jersey for the class. Peterson was primarily recruited by Penn State cornerbacks coach Terry Smith and regional recruiter Deion Barnes.

“He’s got the size and the speed. He’s also smart and athletic, so he can do everything that you’re looking for,” said Winslow Township head coach and former Penn State running back Bill Belton. “I think, for us, he’s a crazy talent. The sky’s the limit for him. But also, he’s a wonderful kid who comes from a great family, a family of athletes. I’m extremely happy and excited for Jules. He fits everything they’re looking for.”

The Nittany Lions previously had 26 commitments in their Class of 2026 but are now down to just 10. Four-star running back Messiah Mickens announced his decision on Tuesday evening, joining former head coach James Franklin at Virginia Tech. Others are expected to join Franklin in Blacksburg in the coming days.
