OU women's basketball: Aaliyah Chavez leads Sooners to overtime win
Thanks to a historic performance by true freshman guard Aaliyah Chavez, No. 9 OU women’s basketball escaped with a 103-98 overtime win over N.C. State on Wednesday.
The Sooners fell behind early, trailing 45-38 at the half. And they headed to the fourth quarter down 80-75. But it was in the final quarter that they willed themselves back into the lead. OU took its first lead since the second quarter with under 2 minutes to play, going up one with 1:08 to play. Ultimately, the game would go to overtime, tied at 89.
OU was able to outscore N.C. State by five in overtime, largely due to senior center Raegan Beers, who finished with 21 points and 12 rebounds.
But it was Chavez who stole the show on Wednesday. The freshman phenom scored a career-high 33 points, which is third all-time in school history for points in a single game by a freshman. Chavez was 13-of-26 from the field and also added four assists and four rebounds.
