Buckeyes freshman wide receiver Kyion Grayes sheds black stripe
COLUMBUS — Ohio State freshman receiver Kyion Grayes began to turn heads in the spring. He didn’t slow down, and he has kept impressing this month during training camp.
Grayes lost his black stripe Saturday, a mark signaling that he is officially a member of the football program for the Buckeyes. He joined receiver Kaleb Brown, cornerback Jyaire Brown and linebacker C.J. Hicks as the freshmen who have shed their stripe during camp.
Grayes announced his stripe removal on Instagram.
Other freshmen to lose their stripes in spring include defensive end Caden Curry and safety Kye Stokes.
For Grayes, he continues to learn from experienced weapons in the Ohio State offense. That has helped him in his first offseason with the Buckeyes.
“The one thing I can do is just learn from them,” Grayes said in February after he arrived at Ohio State. “We come out here and we catch often with C.J. [Stroud]. So I mean, learning from [Smith-Njigba], Emeka [Egbuka], Marvin all these different people. One thing I can do is take from them and just learn as much as I can.”
Grayes has taken all the lessons from more experienced offensive leaders for the Buckeyes, and he has used them on the practice field this month.
That all has helped him impress enough to shed his black stripe Saturday, joining other future Ohio State stars.

Kyion Grayes joins WR Kaleb Brown, CB Jyaire Brown, LB C.J. Hicks, who lost black stripes earlier
Kaleb Brown is just a couple of months into his Ohio State career. He is already impressing in a wide receiver room full of former five-star prospects and talented future pros.
Brown lost his black stripe last week, a mark signaling that he is officially a member of the football program for the Buckeyes. He joined cornerback Jyaire Brown and C.J. Hicks as the freshmen who have shed their stripe during camp.
Ohio State freshman cornerback Jyaire Brown is in the early days of his first training camp with the Buckeyes. But it is clear that he is already making a push for a role. Brown became the first freshman to lose his black stripe during the month of training camp, shedding the stripe that signifies an official place with the Buckeyes, early in camp.
C.J. Hicks became the second Buckeyes freshman of camp to lose his black stripe earlier this month. Hicks is pushing to be a part of the Buckeyes linebacker rotation. With his elite size and speed, he can make it happen. The opportunities will be there against some nonconference opponents to help him prove he belongs on the field this fall.
