UNC Wide Receiver Aziah Johnson Leaves Team

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — North Carolina wide receiver Aziah Johnson has left the team, sources confirmed to Inside Carolina on Tuesday.

The 6-foot, 175-pound redshirt sophomore has played in one game this season — five snaps in the Week 2 win at Charlotte — and was targeted two times, recording a reception for six yards and a drop.

Johnson transferred to UNC this past offseason from Michigan State, signing with the Tar Heels in December, less than two weeks after Bill Belichick was hired.

In 2024, he caught 16 passes for 276 yards and a pair of touchdowns for Michigan State. He totaled 108 yards after the catch, forced three missed tackles, and had one drop in 25 targets. His longest catch of the season was a 52-yard touchdown at Illinois.

As a senior at Richmond (Va.) Jefferson High, UNC gave Johnson his first scholarship offer. While solely playing defensive back, he had a solid junior campaign. But, a prominent offensive role at receiver during his senior year highlighted his complete skillset, raising his recruiting stock. Six games into the season, he had scored nearly 20 all-purpose touchdowns with over 500 yards receiving, which has helped fuel Jefferson High’s undefeated season.

Duke, South Carolina, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, and Michigan State, of course, would also offer Johnson during his high school season. After official visits to MSU and VT, he committed to the Spartans.

North Carolina is 2-1 on the season and heads to Central Florida on Saturday for a 3:30 p.m. kickoff.
