Nebraska head coach Dani Busboom Kelly has promoted Jaylen Reyes to an associate head coach, the program announced on Thursday. Reyes signed a three-year, $630,000 contract to be one of the highest-paid assistant coaches in college volleyball.

Reyes has been an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Nebraska for eight seasons. He joined John Cook’s staff in 2018 after being an assistant coach for the BYU men’s volleyball team, his alma mater, from 2016-18.

“After working with Jaylen for a year, it was a no-brainer to promote him to associate head coach,” Busboom Kelly said in a statement. “Jaylen has been integral to the success of this program for the past eight years, and he continues to show his love for Nebraska. Jaylen brings so much joy and energy to our gym every day. His work ethic and passion for everything he does – whether it be coaching, scouting, recruiting, or beach volleyball – are hard to match, and we are so grateful to have him in our program.”

The Honolulu, Hawaii native quickly rose to be one of the best assistant coaches and recruiters in college volleyball.

During his time at Nebraska, the Huskers have a 191-34 record. He helped the Huskers to three straight Big Ten championships (2023, 2024, 2025). Since 2018, Nebraska has been to three NCAA Championship matches and four total Final Fours. When Busboom Kelly took over in 2025, she kept Reyes on staff.

“I am so grateful to Dani for giving me the opportunity to be part of her first coaching staff here at Nebraska and now continuing on this journey as associate head coach,” Reyes said in a statement. “The state of Nebraska and Husker fans have been so good to me over the last eight years. I love it here and am thankful for all the support. Go Big Red!”

Essential to Nebraska’s volleyball operation

Jeyes has spearheaded the Huskers’ defense and recruiting since 2018. He also leads the beach volleyball program, having grown up in Hawaii playing beach volleyball.

Nebraska has ranked in the top 10 nationally in defense seven times since 2018. They had the best opponent hitting percentage in the country in 2022, 2023 and 2025. He helped coach one of the greatest Huskers of all time, Lexi Rodriguez.

Reyes is in charge of the Huskers’ defensive game plan. He does a great job of scouting opponents, making Nebraska the most unpenetrable defense in the country.

On the recruiting trail, Reyes has helped Nebraska lock down great recruiting classes after great recruiting classes. Nebraska had the No. 1-ranked class in 2021 and 2023, according to PrepVolleyball. They had the No. 2 2025 recruiting class by VB Adrenaline. The Huskers’ class of 2023 (Harper Murray, Andi Jackson, Bergen Reilly and Laney Choboy) could go down as one of Nebraska’s best classes ever.

Reyes’ 2025 salary was $170,000, in a contract that he signed in early 2025 after Busboom Kelly arrived. The contract ran through Jan. 31, 2026.
