Miami Hurricanes Spring Game: Live Blog

The Miami Hurricanes will cap off their spring football practices today at 10:15 a.m. with their annual spring game, taking place at Cobb Stadium.

12:00 pm

11:55 am

10th drive:

Borchers incomplete pass downfield.

Lafayette with the sack. Rowe returned the pass for a pick six, as the sack was not called.

Borchers to Thomas for an 11-yard gain.

Dropped INT by Ingraham.

Incomplete pass by Borchers.

Four-yard run by Whitehouse.

Chukwurah with the would-be sack.

Win by the defense.

Ninth drive:

Anderson to Spafford over the middle for a gain of about 20.

PI on the defense. Ball is moving up.

Anderson with the QB keeper, brought down by Lafayette for a loss of 4-5.

Anderson with a gorgeous 30-yard toss to Spafford over the middle.

Walden punches in the TD.

Win by the offense. Sensational drive by Anderson+Spafford.

Eighth drive:

Mensah overthrows a rocket to Upshaw, who had his defender beat by a couple of steps.

17-yard backfoot toss from Mensah to Barkate.

Briggs reception for gain of 2.

Mensah to Walden for gain of 5. Impressive open field tackle by Day.

Mensah incomplete anticipation pass to Barkate. Pass was slightly over his ahead. Was outside the numbers.

Mensah scramables outside the pocket and hits Gilbert. Pickett might have had a sack there.

Mensah with a beautiful 30-yardish pass to Vaughn. Nice job to highpoint that ball. Play is called back. Maybe he didn’t come down with it?

Mallory for a gain of 6.

Mensah fit a ball into a tight window for Barkate for a gain of around 17. Nice pass. Barkate, Upshaw and Parris have been the most productive receivers today.

Mensah throws a TD on an 11-yard slant from Vaughn.

Win by the offense.

Seventh drive:

35-yard run by Mallory. He’s one of today’s biggest winners.

Broken play, Lafayette on the would-be four-yard loss of Nickel.

Taylor with the PBU on the Nickel pass.

Nickel brought down by Nagle for a two-yard loss.

Defense won that drive.

Sixth drive:

Run by Whitehouse for a gain of 5

Coleman pass downfield is broken up. Wyman in coverage.

Coleman fit that ball in to Parris for a gain of about 20. Coleman quickly diagnosed the Cover 2 and fired in the hole shot to Parris.

Coleman pass downfield to Parris is incomplete. Parris had a couple of steps on the defender.

Coleman fumbles the ball on the QB keeper. Awkward handoff. Charles with the tackle, but Coleman retained possession.

Dropped INT by Edwards.

Nice pass outside the numbers from Coleman to Spafford.

11:30 am

Fifth drive:

Mensah to Wheatley-Humphrey for a gain of four.

Mensah again to WH for a gain of 7.

Sack by Blount. Wilson was also in the backfield.

Run by Mallory for a gain of 8. He’s looked good today.

Another run by Mallory for a gain of 3.

Mensah throws to Upshaw downfield for a 25-yard TD in the same spot that he hit Barkate earlier. Rainbow of a pass that hit Upshaw perfectly in stride.

Win by the offense.

Fourth drive:

Short pass blown up by Dunnigan, who’s having a really solid spring.

Anderson to Parris for a gain of 17 down the middle of the field.

Penalty on offense. Pushed back five yards.

Anderson to Ruskavich for a gain of 11.

Anderson finds Parris again for a gain of around 3. Third and short situation for the second team offense.

Run by Walden is stuffed by Campbell. Loss of 4.

Fourth-down PBU from Dunnigan.

Defense won that drive.

11:17 am

Third drive:

Mensah swing pass to Lyle, who runs for a gain of about six.

Mallory incomplete to Lyle. Wilson was in the backfield.

Wiley takes down Lyle on third down.

Mallory complete to Barkate on fourth down. Gain of 7.

Mallory for a gain of four.

Mensah checks down to Mallory. Gain of around three.

Mallory gain of 1. He then picks up another yard for a fourth-down conversion.

Wheatley-Humphrey runs for 11. Great patience and burst out of the cut from him.

Gorgeous pass from Mensah to Barkate downfield for a 30-yard TD. Barkate beat his defender cleanly off the line.

First win of the day for the Miami offense.

Second drive:

Mallory gain of three.

Bad snap over Nickel’s head. Recovered by Nickel for a loss.

Nickel throw away. Pickett might have had a sack there.

Drive won by the defense.

Live scrimmage time.

1st drive:
Lyle gain of 8.

Mensah to Gilbert for a gain of 7

Lyle for a minimal gain. Lucas with the tackle. Great play from him.

Lyle with a first-down run. He juked out a defender on that run.

2-yard run by Wheatley-Humphrey

Mensah incomplete pass. Broken up by Jennings. Good protection.

Wheatley-Humphrey stuffed at the line. Play made by Davis.

Mensah incomplete deep bass down the left sideline. Jacobs was the target.

Win of a drive for the defense.

3rd down drills now. Mensah hits Lofton for a first down. Lofton’s had a productive day so far.

Nickel coughed up the ball on what looked like a fumbled read option. Bonner cleaned up the loose ball.

Play of the day so far from Omar Thornton, who blew up a goal-to-go run for a four-yard loss.

He *exploded* off the line.

Screen pass to Jacobs. Jarquez Carter showed off his motor and speed to get involved in that tackle after disengaging from the line.

Nice OL push on a run from Pringle, who would’ve ran 4-5 yards before first contact.

Cooper Barkate just burned the DB guarding him off the line and connected with Darian Mensah on a hitch route in one-on-ones. Really impressive get-off; very technically sound.

We’re now watching one-on-ones.

Malachi Toney nearly made a crazy circus catch in the back of the endzone. He came down with the ball, but he was out of out of bounds.

Watching the offensive line go through individual drills, and it’s impressive how physically well-built the unit is. Georgia transfer Jamal Meriweather is among the physical standouts.

As for the receivers, Daylyn Upshaw is ahead of WVU transfer Cam Vaughn on the second team during individual drills.
