LSU's Derek Curiel, Casan Evans named First-Team Freshman All-Americans by D1Baseball

Two of LSU’s brightest young stars have been honored on a national stage. Outfielder Derek Curiel and right-handed pitcher Casan Evans were each named First-Team Freshman All-Americans by D1Baseball.com following standout debut seasons in Baton Rouge.

Curiel, who also earned Second-Team All-America and Second-Team All-SEC honors, quickly established himself as one of the most consistent hitters in the country. The West Covina, Calif., native led LSU with a .345 batting average, collecting 89 hits, 20 doubles, two triples, seven home runs, 55 RBI and 67 runs scored.

Curiel delivered in the biggest moments, shining in the postseason from start to finish. He hit .571 in LSU’s NCAA Super Regional sweep over West Virginia, adding a double, homer, five RBI and six runs. He followed that up by being named to the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional All-Tournament Team after hitting .400 with two doubles, two RBI, and four runs scored. On college baseball’s biggest stage, Curiel was named to the College World Series All-Tournament Team after notching six hits, three RBI and three runs scored.

Statistically, Curiel finished among the SEC’s elite in several categories. He led the league in doubles (20), ranked third in walks (53), fourth in hits (89) and on-base percentage (.470), sixth in runs scored (67), and 10th in batting average (.345).

On the mound, Evans emerged as one of LSU’s most reliable arms. The Houston native posted a 5-1 record, 2.05 ERA, and seven saves across 19 appearances, including three starts. In 52.2 innings pitched, he allowed just 19 walks while striking out 71 batters and holding opponents to a .228 average.

Evans made a major impact in the postseason. In the Baton Rouge Regional title game, he tossed six dominant innings in relief against Little Rock, allowing only one run on four hits while striking out a career-high 12. He also earned a save in LSU’s College World Series opener against Arkansas and picked up the win against UCLA with 4.1 innings of two-run ball, striking out five without issuing a walk.
