LSU Football transfer WR set to miss time after surgery

The LSU Football team is one of the most talked about programs in college football, but the win over Clemson brought with it an injury to an offseason transfer.

Florida State transfer wide receiver Destyn Hill, a Louisiana native who returned to his home state this offseason, suffered a hand injury that required surgery, LSU head coach Brian Kelly revealed this week.

“He has a fractured left hand,” Kelly said. “He had surgery (Monday). We put a plate in it to stabilize it.”

While Hill underwent surgery, Kelly said it’s a recovery process that won’t keep the New Orleans native off the practice field for long.

“We think that we can get him in a position where next week he can be in a limited capacity for us,” Kelly said.

“The plate stabilizes it to the point where we can put a cast on it that allows him to function as a wide receiver. Although disappointed that he won’t play this week, he’s pretty excited that he’ll get a chance to get back out on the field next week.”

Hill signed with Florida State in the 2021 class as a borderline Top 100 prospect and 4-star recruit who ranked among the Top 20 wide receivers on the Rivals Industry Rankings. The Edna Karr standout was in line to start for the Seminoles a year ago, but an injury sidelined him for the year before the season began.

Hill played in 10 games at Florida State before transferring to LSU this offseason.

Barion Brown: 37 snaps

Aaron Anderson: 35 snaps

Kyle Parker: 26 snaps

Chris Hilton Jr.: 24 snaps

Nic Anderson: 24 snaps

Destyn Hill: 2 snaps

Hill was injured in just two snaps, and the transfer wideout underwent a successful surgery on Monday that Kelly said wouldn’t keep the New Orleans native off the practice field for long. When he returns to a game remains to be seen.

In the win over Clemson, the lion’s share of the first-team receiver reps went to Thomas, Anderson, and Brown, a pair of returning wideouts for LSU and an SEC transfer from Kentucky in Brown.

Then came the 20-plus snap wide receivers who got meaningful playing time in Week 1 on the road vs. a Top 5 team in Parker, Hilton, and Anderson. Once again, it’s a pair of Tigers who were on the team a year ago and a transfer in Anderson, who transferred to LSU from Oklahoma this offseason.
