Kentucky Women's Soccer Falls to Louisville in Penalty Kicks
For the second time this week, Kentucky suffered heartbreak in the city of Louisville. The UK women’s soccer team was eliminated in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament by the Cardinals in penalty kicks.
Kentucky broke a scoreless tie in the 47th minute when Thalia Morisi buried a ball in the back of the net. The Cats had multiple chances to extend that lead, but could not get another goal home. It looked like the Wildcats were going to survive and advance. The tide turned late.
Ameila Swinarski dribbled through traffic and scored an equalizer with only 11 minutes remaining in regulation.
Both teams struggled to get good looks in extra time. The Kentucky keeper had something to do with it. Khadijah Cissé had a career-high nine saves.

After 30 scoreless minutes in overtime, the game went to penalty kicks. There are usually only five attempts in a penalty kick shootout. This one went to eight.
Cissé had a couple of saves to extend the shootout. Unfortunately, Kentucky needed one more. In the eighth round, Kentucky missed first, then Louisville delivered the winning goal.
Kentucky finished the season 12-4-5, earned a fifth-place finish in the SEC (5-2-3), and made its second straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
