Kentucky Football has a Stars Coach. What does it mean?

Will Stein is modernizing the Kentucky football operation. His first coaching staff will have a “Stars” coach. No, this is not like Billy Napier’s “GameChanger Coordinator.” This position wasn’t created to manage the egos of the Wildcats’ star players.

On Thursday, the University of Kentucky announced the addition of Chad Wilt as inside linebackers coach and James Gibson as the Stars coach. The former spent the last two seasons at Michigan State, while the latter played for defensive coordinator Jay Bateman at Army West Point. Upon completing his service, Gibson worked for Bateman for two years at Texas A&M.

So, about this “Stars” coach. What the hell does it mean?

In the simplest terms, he’s coaching Kentucky’s nickel position. That was actually how it was initially reported.

If you’re unfamiliar with the nickel position, it’s a cornerback who can drop back into deep coverage, cover a slot receiver, or provide run support in the box. Clearly, it’s a position that requires versatility

Bateman will deploy a 4-2-5 defense that uses those five defensive backs to create pre-snap confusion with simulated pressures. The best defenses are the best disguised, one that confuses the opposing quarterback. That’s the goal.

The Star position is the 5th defensive back who must dabble with duties typically reserved for outside linebackers. That’s the simplest explanation. When we eventually ask Bateman to describe the Star position, he will surely include more detail and nuance.

The Star goes by many different names. Some call it a Monster. When Vanderbilt deployed this defense, they still had the Star logo on their helmet, making it a natural name for the position. It’s been nearly 20 years since Winston Guy played the “Knight” position at Lexington Catholic. They eventually let him play a similar position at Kentucky. In 2011, he had 120 tackles and earned All-SEC honors.

As for the 2026 season, Kentucky recruited Aaron Gates from the transfer portal to play the Star position. He has experience in that spot from his time with Bateman at Florida. Jaden Smith also has the athletic tools that could come into play at the spot.

Kentucky football fans watched Mark Stoops deploy a bend, don’t break odd-front defense for almost 15 years. It’s going to take Big Blue Nation some time to adjust to the new terminology and scheme, but I have a hunch they’ll like the drastic change in philosophy.
