Kentucky DB Tyrell Ajian claimed by XFL's Arlington Renegades

A pair of former Wildcats will team up once again — this time in the professional ranks.

On Tuesday, the XFL announced that Kentucky football defensive back Tyrell Ajian has been claimed by the Arlington Renegades after going unselected in the NFL Draft and the XFL’s Rookie Draft, the latter having taken place on Friday, June 20. Ajian, who was one of 44 players claimed, spent six seasons at UK before heading off to the next level where he will join another former ‘Cat on the Renegades in linebacker Jordan Wright, who was selected by Arlington in the Rookie Draft.

Ajian was a five-year letterwinner during his time at UK, appearing in 61 games (35 starts) while recording 152 tackles, 12 pass breakups, four interceptions, three forced fumbles, 1.5 tackles for loss, and 1.0 sacks in his career. He graduated in May 2022 with a degree in family science and a minor in coaching.

After not hearing his name called during the 2023 NFL Draft, Ajian was initially invited to the Pittsburgh Steelers minicamp. But now, the Ohio product will look to begin his pro career in Texas under head coach Bob Stoops, the older brother of Kentucky head coach Mark Stoops. The Renegades won the 2023 championship last month, beating the DC Defenders 35-26 in San Antonio, TX.

Along with Ajian and Wright, a third former Wildcat was also picked up by the XFL. Linebacker Jacquez Jones was selected in the Rookie Draft by the Orlando Guardians.
