Former Wildcat Deone Walker Earns All-Rookie Honors

Like jumping into a pool off the high-dive, Deone Walker made a big splash during his first season of professional football.

The former Kentucky defensive lineman was named to the NFL All-Rookie Team by the Pro Football Writers of America. Walker started in 16 of 17 games for the Buffalo Bills as an anchor of the interior defensive line. He made 39 total tackles, 8.0 tackles for loss, and one sack. Walker added four passes defended, four quarterback hits, and a forced fumble.

Walker was a game-wrecker in the playoffs. He had six tackles, a pair of pass deflections, and picked off his first career pass. He dropped by as a spy. Somehow, Bo Nix didn’t see the 6-foot-7, 330-pounder in the middle of the field. He jumped the passing lane to give Buffalo the ball deep in Denver territory.

This shouldn’t surprise Kentucky football fans. Just like in Buffalo, after he appeared in his first game, Walker emerged as a starter for the rest of his career. A tackle for loss at Florida in game two opened the eyes of NFL scouts.

At one point, he was a projected first-round pick. The thing about the Detroit native is that he refuses to relent. That’s a good thing, and a bad thing. He played through his junior season with a broken vertebra in his back. It slowed him down and forced him to fall on draft boards.

Walker was selected in the fourth round with the No. 109 overall pick. He’s the only defensive lineman on the PFWA All-Rookie Team who wasn’t a first-round pick. General Manager Brandon Beane is taking plenty of heat, particularly for his Keon Coleman selection, but it’s clear he got this one right with Walker as one of the steals of the NFL Draft.

This isn’t Walker’s only All-Rookie nod. He also received first-team recognition from ESPN, while his fellow former Cat, Buffalo cornerback Maxwell Hairston, was a second-team selection.
