All three Kentucky WBB newcomers have arrived on campus

Kyra Elzy’s latest batch of newcomers has arrived in Lexington.

On Friday, all three of Kentucky women’s basketball’s newest members for the 2023-24 season made it to campus for move-in day. That trio includes a pair of freshmen in four-star guard Jordy Griggs and unranked forward Janae Walker along with Tennessee transfer and former Miss Kentucky Basketball winner Brooklynn Miles. These three will look to replace the production lost from last season’s squad, which saw three Wildcats graduate and three more leave through the transfer portal.

Five of those six departures from the 2022-23 season were among the top eight in the rotation for Kentucky last season. Meaning over 53 percent of the total minutes and over 59 percent of the total scoring from last season are now gone.

Griggs, Walker, and Miles should bring plenty to the table for Coach Elzy though, who is about to enter her fourth season in charge of the Wildcats. Coming off a disappointing run in ’22-23 that saw the ‘Cats finish 12-19 on the season and miss the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2018, improvement will be expected.

Griggs is the heralded high school recruit who possesses impressive size for a guard at 6-foot-2 and can fill up the box score. She won a national championship with Montverde (FL) Academy during her senior season and will bring some height to Kentucky’s backcourt. Walker was a late addition for Elzy, but one with plenty of potential. The 6-foot-4 forward can stretch the floor and defend multiple positions.

As for Miles, her playing time was cut in half from her freshman to sophomore year at Tennessee, but she transfers to UK with the opportunity to take on a larger role. The 5-foot-4 rising junior guard was a former nationally-ranked recruit out of Franklin County High School and could slide into the backcourt rotation from day one.

These aren’t the only three offseasons additions for Elzy though. She also brought in a trio of new staff members. Kentucky hired Liz Brown as the program’s new NIL director, Jenny Huth as the new associate coach of player development, and Jodi Ansert as the new basketball recruiting assistant.
