BOX SCORE RECAP: Hawkeyes fall short against Iowa State
A down to the wire game for the second consecutive night at Hilton Coliseum, it was 4th-ranked Iowa State coming away with a 66-62 win over Ben McCollum and the Hawkeyes. With the loss, Iowa moves to 8-2 on the season.
The Cyclones got off to a slow shooting start, making just 3-of-12 attempts, which allowed Iowa shake off a quiet start of their own. Leading 12-8 at the under 12 timeout, the Hawkeyes went on a 13-4 run to open a 13-point lead. Iowa State made four of their last seven shots in the half, but a couple of big threes from Stirtz and Howard got Iowa to the half with a 33-25 advantage.
Momentum flipped right out of the gates in the second half, with ISU going on an extended 22-4 run to build a double-digit lead at the under 12 timeout. Iowa responded with an 8-0 run to cut the deficit to 47-45. The two sides went back-and-forth down the stretch, but the Hawkeyes could never draw even. A one-possession game in the final seconds, Joshua Jefferson drew a foul and made both at the line to clinch the win for ISU.
Iowa scored 62 points on 60 possessions (1.033 points per possession), while shooting 26-of-51 (51.0%) from the floor, 7-of-15 (46.7%) from three-point range and 3-of-5 (60.0%) from the free throw line. Tavion Banks led the Hawkeyes in scoring with 14 points, while Cam Manyawu added ten points and six rebounds. Bennett Stirtz finished with ten points and five rebounds.

Iowa State scored 66 points on 62 possessions (1.065 points per possession), while shooting 22-of-52 (42.3%) from the floor, 5-of-15 (33.3%) from three-point range and 17-of-23 (73.9%) from the free throw line. Joshua Jefferson led the way with 24 points, while Tamin Lipsey (14) and Milan Momcilovic (10) were double figures scorers.
The Hawkeyes outrebounded the Cyclones 31-28, pulling down 23-of-33 (69.7%) defensive rebounds and 8-of-26 (30.8%) offensive rebounds. The turnover battle went in favor of the Cyclones, turning it over just nine times, while Iowa turned it over 16 times. Iowa State outscored the Hawkeyes 26-19 in points off turnovers/second chance points.
