Jon Sumrall brings the juice as Amare Nugent commits at UF's Junior Day
Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) American Heritage 4-star cornerback Amare Nugent became the first commitment in the Florida Gators 2027 class this past weekend. Nugent visited Gainesville for the Gators Junior Day and delivered the good new head coach Jon Sumrall face-to-face. That conversation is always one with high energy, but for Sumrall, his energy knows no limits. His reaction to Nugent’s commitment can be seen in the clip below and is an awesome watch.
Beyond blessed and forever grateful I want to thank God for every step of this journey my fam for their love and sacrifices, and all the coaches who believed in me. After a lot of prayer and thought, I’m proud to be committed to the University of Florida. 🐊💙🧡#Gatornation pic.twitter.com/hR0FKyDL0t

Amare Nugent was already excited to join Gator Nation and told Gators Online that it made that moment even more special, seeing how Coach Sumrall reacted.
“The moment was very exciting for me, and as you can see from the video, it was exciting for him. Coach Sumrall isn’t the type of person to fake his emotions,” Nugent said. “He’s going to show you the real him, and in that moment, the real him came out. It was an exciting moment for me, him, my family, as well as their whole coaching staff.”
Amare Nugent knew very quickly that he wanted to be a Gator
It didn’t take very long for the 6-foot, 170-pounder’s mind to arrive at knowing that he wanted to pull the trigger. It was well before the words “I’m committing” came out of his mouth. In fact, it was shortly after he arrived at the Gators football facility this past Saturday morning.
“Honestly, when I got on campus and got around everyone, I knew that I was going to commit. Just how they greeted us with all the new coaches there, I was already sure before I gave them the good news, and before Coach Sumrall got as excited as he did. Seeing his reaction may have given me a little extra confirmation, but I was already sure as soon as I got on campus.”
The Gators have a rich history, but have run into adversity in recent years on the field. However, Coach Sumrall has a track record of winning. That gives Amare Nugent confidence that he’s the right man to turn things around.
“Florida has been through a lot and has a whole bunch of history. Coach Sumrall has a really good background from his time at Troy and Tulane. He’s been to four championships, so he knows how to win. I have no doubt he’s going to turn the program around, and I’m excited to see what he and the staff does. Most of the coaches have been together for a lot of years. That’s exciting too.”

Nugent is also excited to work with his future position coach
Much of the Junior Day visit this past weekend was spent around Florida cornerbacks coach Brandon Harris. He’s a South Florida guy himself, which is an appeal to Nugent.
“Coach Harris is from down my way, so he already knows what my story is. That played a huge role, and I’m excited to see what things they do this year.”
Harris’ focus on the work in the field and the preparation ahead of games and practices is also something that resonates with Amare Nugent.
“The biggest thing he said that stood out to me was that if I’m gonna be a Gator, then I better be ready to work. At Florida, they’re a program with a solid history. It’s not easy there. It’s the SEC. So, I’m going to come in ready to work. I’ve only known work since I was a kid, so when he said that, it was talking right to how I am and how I’ve always been.”
