The Florida Gators softball team opened its rivalry matchup against the Florida State Seminoles with immediate momentum on Wednesday night but fell short in a 3-1 loss as FSU responded with timely offense to secure the win.

Florida wasted no time setting the tone, as sophomore Taylor Shumaker launched a home run as the first batter of the game, giving the Gators an early 1-0 lead. The quick start energized UF and put early pressure on its in-state rival.

However, the Seminoles responded just as quickly. Florida State junior Isa Torres mirrored Shumaker’s effort, leading off her team’s first at-bat with a home run of her own to even the score at 1-1. The back-to-back opening statements from both teams highlighted the intensity of the rivalry and set the stage for a competitive matchup.

Following the explosive first inning, both teams settled in defensively. The score remained tied through the second inning, with pitching and fielding efforts on both sides limiting additonal scoring opportunities.

Florida State broke the tie in the third inning, once again turning to Torres. The junior shortstop launched her second home run of the night to deep center field, giving the Seminoles a 2-1 lead and putting the Gators on their heels.

FSU added to its lead in the fourth inning through a more grinding rally. Kennedy Harp singled and Marin Heller walked before Shelby McKenzie drove in a run with an RBI single to push the lead to 3-1. The inning grew more chaotic from there. A pitching change, a hit batter, and a wild pitch kept the bases loaded before Ashtyn Danley, who had already moved from left field to the pitcher’s circle, got Florida out of the inning and never looked back.

During a fourth-inning broadcast interview, Florida coach Tim Walton discussed slight adjustments he would like to see from junior Keagan Rothrock, who has been a steady presence for Walton and his team on the pitching mound.

“She’s one of those with her spin and her speed, she does provide lift,” said Walton. “We’ve learned a lot together, and I told Keagan, you don’t have to make a 360 out there, just inch by inch make little adjustments.”

One of the night’s more intriguing storylines was Danley’s dual role for Florida State. The sophomore began the game in left field before transitioning to the pitcher’s circle in the fourth inning, where she shut the door on any Florida comeback hopes and earned the win.

Despite opportunities, the Gators were unable to generate another scoring breakthrough. The score remained unchanged after the fourth inning, as Florida State’s defense held firm and prevented any late-game rally attempts by UF.

Earlier in the week, Florida players Kenleigh Cahalan and Jocelyn Erickson received Golden Tickets to the AUSL Draft, marking a significant achievement for the program. While the recognition highlighted individual success, the result Wednesday night served as a reminder of the challenges that come with facing a competitive rival.

The loss marked a tough outcome for Florida in a high-stakes matchup, particularly after the team’s strong opening. However, the Gators will have an opportunity to regroup quickly, as they are set to face Florida State again in a rematch on Tuesday.
