Asa Turner granted extra year of eligibility, status to be determined
GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Florida Gators redshirt senior safety Asa Turner has been granted a sixth year of eligibility, UF coach Billy Napier announced at Pro Day. However, his status with the Gators moving forward is still uncertain.
Turner suffered a season-ending hamstring injury in the 2024 opener against Miami. He did not go through Senior Day or participate in Pro Day, and Napier revealed Thursday that Turner has received the waiver he applied for.
“He’s been granted an extra year of eligibility, and I think his role on our team and his health is a little bit to be determined,” Napier said. “But I think in general, it’s a good thing for him.”
Turner is not listed on Florida’s 2025 roster and hasn’t participated in spring camp. He had offseason surgery to repair his right hamstring injury, and his recovery from that will determine what’s next from him.
“He’s career has been extended for a year, and then we’ll kind of see where we end up,” Napier said. “He’s a guy who’s had injury issues through his career, not only here but also at Washington. But great kid, very smart, very dependable. Just gotta work on the durability piece.”
Turner was one of the top transfers in Florida’s 2024 class and earned the starting job at strong safety. After hurting his hamstring vs. Miami, he tried to work his way back from the injury.

Turner was upgraded to questionable for the Tennessee and Kentucky games, and Napier said Florida was “hopeful to get him back” on Oct. 28, but he was listed as out from the Georgia week on.
Turner, a five-year starter at Washington, has 147 career tackles and six interceptions. He was the No. 11 safety and No. 165 overall transfer in the On3 Industry rankings.
