High School Recap: Alabama commitments lead playoff wins as others close seasons

The month begins with high schools throughout the country entering the state (some have started) football playoffs. Alabama has 20 commitments (’26-’27) who will see their season continue next week.

Thomalla completed 14-of-22 for 295 yards with two touchdowns. He also had 45 yards rushing with another score in a 45-3 win against Westview in the first round of the playoffs. Round 2 at home vs. Elkhorn South next week.

Ka’waa had 163 yards passing and three touchdown passes in a 40-22 win in the first round of the playoffs against Timpview. Second round vs. Woods Cross next week.

Morgan had 8 receptions for 111 yards and two touchdowns in a 45-13 win against Percy Jones. Benjamin Russell hosts Central (Tuscaloosa) in the first round of the state playoffs next week.

Barnett had three carries for 35 yards and a touchdown in a 42-6 win against Robinson. First round of the playoffs starts next week (opponent unknown).

Morgan had eight receptions for 111 yards and two touchdowns in a 45-13 win against Percy Jones. Benjamin Russell hosts Central (Tuscaloosa) in the first round of the state playoffs next week. Morgan has 70 receptions for 1,162 yards and 14 touchdowns this season.

Sutter had two receptions for 25 yards and a touchdown. More importantly, he helped his team achieve its first playoff win since 2017. Dunlap lost by 1-point in the first round of the playoffs the last two years. Second round game @ Crete-Monee on Saturday.

Johnson helped Muscle Shoals to a 31-7 win against Austin on Thursday with seven QB hurries, one fumble recovery, one tackle, and a pass breakup. The Trojans are undefeated heading into the state playoffs. It has only allowed two teams to score more than 7 points twice this season (15, 17). Will host first round playoff game vs. Mae Jemison on Thursday.

Finch had a fumble recovery returned for a touchdown in helping his team to a 42-7 win against Perry Meridian in the first round of the playoffs. (Will post additional stats when available). The second round of the playoffs will be at home next Friday vs. Southport.

•Five-star CB Jorden Edmonds (Marietta-Sprayberry): 62-14 win vs. Woodstock. Edmonds had 3 receptions for 48 yards and two kick returns for 70 yards. He also had three tackles, 1 pass breakup and a forced fumble. 1st round at home vs. Lee County in two weeks (HS playoffs in Ga. begin on 11/14).

Edwards had two tackles, one tackle for loss in a 35-0 win against St. James. He had an interception returned for a TD called back on Saturday afternoon. The No. 2 nationally ranked team plays at IMG Academy (No. 3) next week. Both will move to the 1/2 spot after St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.), ranked No. 1, fell at home against Mater Dei on Friday night.

Gadsden City won 42-0 against Fultondale on Thursday. Gibson had five tackles and an 85-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. The Titans enter the playoffs next week (vs. Jasper), winning seven of their last eight games.

Won final regular-season game 38-0 against First round of the playoffs (at home) vs. Columbus on 11/14.

Garror had a forced fumble (waiting on other stats) in a 21-12 loss at Baker. He suffered a shoulder injury, but will play next week. Vigor hosts Charles Henderson in the first round.

Johnson wasn’t targeted in McEachern’s 79-7 win against Osborne to end the regular season undefeated. The first round of playoffs begins next week with a home game against Walton (11/14).

Waiting on final stats:
•Top 100 DL Nolen Wilson (Picayune, Miss.): 35-31 road win at Gautier. 1st round (home) game vs. Pearl River Central.
•Three-star DL Corey Howard (Valdosta, Ga.): Valdosta won its rivalry game 23-14 against Lowndes, previously undefeated, and captured the region championship on Friday night. First round vs. Dacula (11/14)
•Three-star S Rihyael Kelly (Cincinnati-Winton Woods): 39-6 win against Little Miami in the first round of the playoffs. Second round at Princeton.

On a bye (Playoffs next week, all at home):
•Five-star LB Xavier Griffin/Top 100 Edge Jamarion Matthews (Gainesville, Ga): First round of playoffs vs. Dunwoody (11/14)
•No. 2 RB EJ Crowell (Jackson, Ala.): Round 1 (home) vs. Ashford
•’27 Top 100 QB Trent Seaborn (Alabaster-Thompson): Round 1 (home) vs. Carver-Montgomery
•’27 four-star OL Jatori Williams (Phenix City-Central): Round 1 (home) vs. Hoover

End of the road (final HS game):
•Four-star OL Sam Utu (Orange, Calif-Lutheran): Utu’s season ended with a 30-28 loss to Servite. His team had two wins.
•Three-star OL Jared Doughty (Atlanta-Banneker) concluded his HS career on a good note. Banneker with a 16-6 win against Morrow. Bannker only won its first and final game.
•Three-star OL Bear Fretwell: Fretwell helped his team to a 48-8 win against Beach. The Yellow Jackets lost last week, eliminating the chance to make the playoffs.
•Three-star LB Zay Hall (Tuscaloosa-Hillcrest): Won its final regular season game last week (25-23 vs. Oak Mountain). Hillcrest was on a bye, but failed to reach next week’s playoffs.
•Three-star WR Owen Cabell (Nashville-CPA): 34-13 loss to McCallie on Friday night. CPA failed to make the playoffs after only two wins. It won the state championship last year (lost a lot of senior starters).
•Three-star WR Brian Williams (Jacksonville-First Academy): 35-28 win at Lakeland. Williams had six catches for 58 yards and two touchdowns.
