Georgia turns up the heat on No. 1 safety Giovanni Tuggle
Georgia is heavily involved in the recruitment of Giovanni Tuggle, the nation’s No. 1 safety in the 2028 class.
He grew up in the Bulldogs’ backyard, literally down the road in Winder, about a 30-minute drive from Athens.
Georgia has elevated Tuggle to a top priority, punctuated by head coach Kirby Smart making an in-person visit to his school earlier this week. The 2028 safety prospect appreciated Smart coming to see him.
Relationships matter to Tuggle, the nation’s No. 12 player in 2028. He believes Smart is investing in him beyond football, both on and off the field, with the Bulldogs’ head coach making a point of getting to know him personally.
“It went pretty well. Me and him talked it up. It was pretty good,” Tuggle recently told UGASports after the visit. “He was just telling me that I need to stay focused on all of the little things going on and stuff like that.”
Tuggle is also big on development and has taken note of how many players at his position Smart has sent to the NFL.
“I just like how he developed kids and puts them into the league and how they’re learning to really play football under him,” the 6-foot-2, 180-pound safety prospect said. “(It also helps) that he played safety at Georgia.”
Tuggle recaps trips to Athens, takes notes on current safety
Tuggle was in Athens twice this past season for game-day visits, seeing Georgia host Marshall and Alabama.
He enjoyed the game day atmosphere, especially the matchup between the Bulldogs and the Crimson Tide.
Tuggle said it was one of the “loudest” environments he’s ever experienced.
During his visits, Tuggle watched Georgia’s secondary with a close eye, zeroing in on former five-star KJ Bolden. He was thrilled to see Bolden start as a freshman in 2024 and continue to be dominant on the field last season. Tuggle grew up watching Bolden star at Buford during his high school career.
“He’s a very talented player and he knows what he’s doing out there,” Tuggle said of Bolden.
What’s next for Tuggle?
Tuggle is coming off a successful sophomore campaign, in which he totaled 74 tackles (53 solo, 21 assisted), 2.0 tackles for loss, four interceptions, five pass deflections, one forced fumble, and a fumble recovery. As a freshman, the Winder native recorded 39 tackles and grabbed six interceptions in eight games.
Tuggle has a number of Power Five offers, including Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, LSU, Nebraska, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Penn State, Tennessee and Texas A&M, among others.
Although he has not released a list of top schools, Tuggle said the Bulldogs have positioned themselves well. He just wants to keep building relationships with Smart, safeties coach Travaris Robinson and other staff members.
“I just really want to learn who they are, you know?” Tuggle said. “That’s really it.”
