2027 TE Sydney Padilla commits to Rutgers Football
In the midst of transfer portal season, Rutgers Football has continued its work on the high school recruiting trail.
The Scarlet Knights have landed their newest commit of the 2027 class, as West Orange (NJ) tight end Sydney Padilla announced his commitment to the program. While not the first of the class — that distinction belongs to Florida State tight end commit Connor Winn — Padilla becomes the first high school commitment of the new year as the focus begins to shift back towards the high school trail.
Padilla just finished his junior year with the Mountaineers.
“I’m committed to Rutgers,” Padilla told TKR. “I chose them because of my relationship with Coach (Scott) Vallone and how close it is to home. With our relationship, I feels he understands me more as player because we have spent a lot of time on the phone.”
There has been mutual interest between Padilla and Rutgers for quite some time, as he was one of the first 2027 recruits the coaching staff showed significant interest in. He first earned his offer from the staff in June of 2025, while also receiving offers from Syracuse, Boston College, Kentucky, and West Virginia at the Power Four level.
Since then, Padilla visited the Scarlet Knights six times, compared to one for all other schools. He was on campus four times for gameday visits, and Rutgers visited West Orange on Thursday, as well.
As a junior, Padilla helped lead the Mountaineers to an 8-3 record and a sectional final appearance, where they fell to Passaic Tech 56-42. On offense, he caught nine passes for 111 yards and four touchdowns at tight end. He also led the way on the defensive line, recording 57 tackles — 14 for loss — with 11 sacks to lead the team.
At 6-foot-4 and 215 pounds, Padilla projects as a tight end at the next level and becomes the first 2027 recruit from the Garden State to commit to the Scarlet Knights.
“I plan on recruiting others, but no one in mind yet,” said Padilla. “My message to guys considering RU would be come to Rutgers if you want to prove people wrong and chase your goals. I feel like there’s a narrative around Rutgers, I want to prove everybody wrong and help coach (Greg) Schiano execute his goal of winning a national championship.”
