Texas Tech CB coach Darcel McBath: 'We're further ahead than last year'
Texas Tech Cornerbacks’ Coach Darcel McBath led the way for one of the most improved secondary’s in the country last year. He will look to continue that success heading into the 2026 season with some new pieces. Coach McBath caught up with the local media yesterday to give some insight into how the position group is looking.
Building On Last Year’s Progress
“Moving forward, I think just the leadership across the board from our guys that have returned, the standard that they’re kind of implementing with everybody else who’s new. I think we’re further ahead right now than we were at this point last year.
I think there’s a lot more familiarity between the coaches, between the players, our system and our culture of what we do. I think it’s kind of the way we kind of fast tracked it a little bit this year. I mean, we still got to go out and execute and play football and continue to attack the weight room and do all those good things, but I think culture wise, we’re in a really good spot.”
What Does The Two-Deep Look Like Right Now?
“It’s a mixture. We got guys in and out. I’m trying to get guys as many reps as possible, especially those young guys we have that we got in January. Obviously we got Davin Martin from UTSA, got Amier Boyd back. We got Boss Martin who we signed this fall.
I mean Luke Bell who we signed this fall, he’s getting reps, doing a great job. Ashton Hampton‘s doing an unbelievable job for us. So I don’t really have it too deep at the moment. I’m just kind of rotating guys, trying to even out the reps so we can we can have a productive spring.”
Performing Above Expectations
“Boss Martin has had an unbelievable spring. I’m really excited about him. Davin Martin, not brothers, not related, but having a great spring. Really, really happy with him. Luke Bell‘s coming along really well. Ashton Hampton has taken another step in the right direction. He’s attacking it every day. I mean, I don’t want to sit up here and say everything’s great, but I mean, these guys have really, really taken a challenge. And they’re competing with each other to be in the two deep in the fall.”
Specific Areas To Work On?
“Everything. All the time. That’s how we roll. They ask me that question all the time. You know, one of them will roll in my office and say “Coach, man, what do I need to work on?”, everything, man. We’re always working on everything. We’re trying to be the best we can be. And by trying to attack every angle of my game, we can get there.”
Young Guys Impressing Early On?
“I like them all. Boss Martin, because he has the most takeaways out of the young guys. I’ll roll with him. He’s done a phenomenal job thus far of picking up the defense. Kind of acclimating to the speed of college football, the physicality of college football. Obviously, he’s a bigger frame guy. He’s just really attacked the small things, you know, the weight room, the nutrition, the training room, which has kind of helped him propel himself into that spot.”
