Texas Tech transfer WR Donte Lee Jr has been showing out in spring camp. His teammate Kenny Johnson praised him along with some of his other teammates in the receiver room, “Like we got some dudes like and they’re making plays every day”.

Lee was a part of the Red Raiders highly rated 2026 transfer portal class. The portal class ranked 2nd according to On3, only behind national champion Indiana. Donte caught up with the local media on Tuesday for interviews.

Career Path

Coming out of high school, Lee committed to Shaw; a D2 school in Raleigh, North Carolina. He continued to put in the work and ended up in Lubbock.

“So I was under recruited coming out of high school and I just had to put my head down really. I felt as though Shaw was the best opportunity out of the options that I had. So I put my head down before I went to Shaw, started working, gaining some weight. And my first year there at Shaw, I started as a true freshman, but I broke my clavicle in the second week going into that. So I had a medical red shirt, I did another year there and I had my breakout year and I hit the floor running, ended up at Liberty, did two years at Liberty and now I’m at Tech, which is great.”

“I feel like I was meant to be here, you know, I just had to work, had to take steps up forward and forward just to get right here where I’m at. I’m so grateful for everything that I had so far.”

Team Chemistry

Team Chemistry is obviously one of the biggest factors in how a team will perform in a given season, and Red Raiders shouldn’t have to worry about that aspect of the team according to Donte.

Sorsby, man. That that’s my guy right there. as soon as I got off the plane here, like he was trying to catch as soon as I got off the plane. So, that just shows like his work ethic and how much he wants to build a connection with his receivers and that’s my guy for sure.”

“I love the energy in the receiver room. There’s no bad blood between anybody. Everybody just wants to get better and better each other each and every day. We going to push each other to each other’s limits just so we could be the best receiver room in the nation.”

Compared To Prior Rooms

From D2, to Group of 5, and now in the Big 12. Donte has experienced almost all levels of upper college football, but he believes this is the most competitive WR room he’s been a part of.

“Um, it’s a lot of competition, Obviously there was competition at Liberty and at Shaw, but here it’s guys from everywhere and everybody just brings their best to the table every single day. So, that’s why I love competing with those guys for sure.”

Strengths & Weaknesses

What are some weaknesses Donte will look to take care of during spring camp, and the fall?

“Well, I want to work on just my route running in general and just become an overall better receiver. Blocking, knowing the playbook in and out and my releases, man. Like, I don’t want to depend on my speed all the time. I want to become a very technical receiver.”

Strengths that Red Raiders can look forward to?

“Definitely the deep ball and my speed and that big play ability whenever I get the ball in my hand.”
