Davin Martin emerging as shutdown corner in spring

by: B.Poormon04/02/26

Texas Tech transfer CB Davin Martin has brought a spark to the secondary in spring camp. His teammate Amier Boyd recently praised him with the growth he’s been producing in the DB room.

“He’s been looking real good. He’s real long. He can shut down the side of the field for sure. So, being able to do that can help the defense big time.”

Martin was a part of the Red Raiders 2026 transfer portal class which ranked 2nd according to On3 finding themselves just behind the reigning national champions Indiana. Davin addressed the media on Tuesday following spring football practice.

Why He Chose Texas Tech

Prior to his arrival in Lubbock, Martin spent the last 3 seasons at the University of Texas in San Antonio improving throughout each of them. Martin expressed why he felt Texas Tech was the best fit when he entered the portal.

“I just wanted to explore my options and take that next step from the American (Athletic Conference) and go to like a power conference and just show that I can compete and do it here.

It was fun just talking to different coaches and just only took one visit here but, you know, being on the phone with different people and just talking and building relationships with them and eventually picking Tech.”

Familiarizing Himself with Coach McBath and Wood’s System

Martin was real quick to express his excitement learning from cornerbacks coach Darcel McBath, and pointed how he’s still learning something new everyday in defensive coordinator Shiel Wood’s scheme.

“I learn something new every day from him. I’m still learning, still getting better and improving. I love the way he coaches. I like his coaching style and the way he pushes me each and every day to get better and get better at something like your 1% for the day.

It takes time. It’s day by day. It’s still still early in the spring, so you know, every day I’m learning something new. I try not to make the same mistake and just keep improving, keep getting better.”

Strengths and Weaknesses

Martin allowed zero touchdowns in 248 coverage snaps last year with UTSA, and got his first collegiate interception. Martin looks to build off of that to take his game to the next level in a Double T uniform. He also touched on what he could work on more, as well as how thrown balls from quarterback Brendan Sorsby is helping in that regard.

“Being out here at Tech, I work on everything. So, majority just at the line, just press footwork, tagging the ball in the air, going up and getting the ball, and just being more physical at the point of attack.”

It’s helping me get better as well cuz the ball is going to be in a much better place. So, I have to be tighter in coverage obviously. So, it’s it’s definitely different. It’s going to help me as a player.”
