Consistency, Depth, and Physicality: Inside Juice Johnson’s WR Room This Spring
There’s a different feel around Texas Tech’s wide receiver room this spring. Whether it’s deeper competition, improved health, or a renewed emphasis on physicality, the Red Raiders are building a unit that could become one of the most complete groups in the Big 12. Texas Tech wide receivers coach Justin “Juice” Johnson met with the media to give a detailed look at a receiver room defined by depth, versatility, and internal competition.
Johnson emphasized consistency, toughness, and a culture-driven approach as key themes heading into the 2026 season.
Immersing this Group Into the Culture
Looking across the room, with several new receivers arriving via the transfer portal, Johnson said the focus has been on building cohesion rather than overcoming challenges.
“I think the main thing is, and I think we do a great job starting from top down with Coach (Joey) McGuire. The main thing is just getting them in, and getting them to understand the standard, and the culture that’s here. I wouldn’t necessarily say a challenge but very intentional about like the things that we want to accomplish. And so, it’s more about bringing those guys together making sure that those guys are connected that way. There’s a high level of representation with whoever hits the field. I think we’re as deep as we’ve been from a talent perspective. And so, I think not necessarily a challenge but you know I think we’re tasked with being very intent intentional about uh bringing the room together and just culturally the buy in.”
Versatility Over Position Labels
Despite the depth, Johnson said the staff isn’t focused on locking players into specific roles just yet. Instead, he looks to make this a group that can thrive regardless of whether they line up on the inside or out.
“I wouldn’t necessarily like at this time of spring tab that ‘hey here’s a slot, here’s an outside guy.’ With the depth that we have right now we’re training everybody and being very intentional about being able to line guys up at at every spot. So I wouldn’t necessarily say there’s a specific spot or a placement as of now. Everybody better go out there and know inside and outside and that way we get the best guys on the field no matter the position.”
Setting the Standard with Physicality
According to Johnson, the ceiling of the room isn’t about hype, it’s about execution. One non-negotiable in Johnson’s room is physicality, particularly in the run game. He emphasized that effort, toughness, and attention to detail will ultimately define the group.
“The guys that have graduated that have transferred here probably all tell you the same thing, right? It’s like, you know, we got a saying in the room, ‘No block, No rock.’ And so the intentionality, the time we spend on drilling it. Like we don’t just talk about it, we drill it, too. Like I’ll spend individual time drilling these things and working to be physical, but they know that’s the mentality and that’s the mindset in general.
So we’re going to go out there and if you’re not going to block, you’re going to stand by me and watch. And so, they know the expectation. It’s probably a little different of expectation, right? Than than those guys have been used to play in and play out of the detail of how we’re approaching a block. And then the effort to sustain those blocks and the way we grade their blocking just like the route running stuff. Because at the end of the day these guys have been playing football for a while.
And so what we’re talking about right now is just effort and details and toughness, right? That’s what we want to see this spring, right? Is your effort on point, right? Are you honed in on the details? And then how tough are you playing? Because at the end of the day, that’s what it’s going to come down to. We’re going to have plenty of scheme. We’re going to be able to scheme people up and do all that. Mack (Leftwich) does a great job of that, but I think at the end of the day, it’s going to come down to us, you know, being really detailed. Playing with great effort, out efforting people, and being really tough.”
