Year by year the coaching profile of Mike Shanahan continues to get more impressive and today he was rewarded by the Indiana Hoosiers.

Today, Shanahan signed a new three-year extension to remain with Curt Cignetti as Indiana’s offensive coordinator. No financial terms of the extension were revealed.

This is the second time Indiana has rewarded a coordinator as recently defensive coordinator Bryant Haines signed a 3-year extension, making him the first $3 million assistant coach in Indiana history. Indiana rewarded Shanahan with a raise following last season, increasing his salary to $1.15 million for the 2024 season.

The 35-year-old Shanahan is in his second season at Indiana and his fourth year working with Cignetti as his offensive coordinator.

The Hoosiers offense is led by Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Fernando Mendoza and is ranked inside the Top 10 nationally in total yards per game, rushing yards per game and are fourth in scoring offense.

This became the second year in a row that Shanahan’s offense was able to take in a transfer quarterback and lead him to stardom. In 2024 it was Kurt Rourke leading Indiana to the college football playoffs. After transferring from Ohio University, Rourke went on to pass for 3,042 yards, 29 touchdowns and 5 interceptions.

Shanahan was a 1st-team All-State performer in both football and basketball at Norwin High School before signing on with Dave Wannstedt and the Pitt Panthers.

During his senior season with the Panthers, Shanahan recorded 62 receptions for 983 yards and 6 touchdowns, which earned him second-team All-Big East team. He was also selected to the Big East All-Academic Football team four consecutive seasons.

Considering the success he’s having, it’s only a matter of time before Shanahan is given the opportunity to run his own program as a head coach.
