First SEC offer makes an impression on Tavares Powell

Bradenton (Fla.) Southeast wide receiver Tavares Powell had offers from West Virginia and Michigan State going into the weekend. Powell now has an offer from Kentucky after a weekend visit in Lexington.

Several prospects from the Sunshine State made it to Kentucky, including defensive line recruits Jamar Thompson and Javion Herrington. Powell (6’2, 189) was part of that same group.

Originally they were planning to fly up as a group but they ended up driving, knowing that the weather could prompt them to stick around the state for a while. Powell and those prospects were still in Kentucky on Sunday morning when they spoke with KSR+.

“I can’t say I was in touch with Kentucky before but on Twitter some of the coaches did start following me and that’s normally how it goes for me in the process. They start following me and then they offer but I didn’t expect it to be that fast,” Powell said. “I’m still in Kentucky right now. I took a visit and hung out with Pete (Nochta) and all them on the coaching staff. We went bowling while we were there. After that he called me and gave me the offer.”

Powell said the group was supposed to depart for Florida today but they’re sticking around for another day.

It was an unconventional visit given the distance traveled in a car and the fact that snow impacted the region so much. That wasn’t unique to Kentucky. While on campus Powell had a chance to speak with Anwar Stewart, Bunchy Stallings, and some of the program’s equipment managers while he visited.

“I actually liked it a lot. I definitely want to come back for another visit. I’ll definitely be back in the spring and then after that I’m probably going to be taking an official visit,” Powell said.

Florida State, West Virginia, and Miami are some of the other schools Powell said he is eager to visit.

Powell has been clocked at 4.47 seconds in the 40-yard dash. It was Nochta who extended the offer on his visit.
