Georgia holds Arkansas to five hits, snaps Razorbacks' winning streak at six
No. 16 Arkansas (26-14, 9-8 SEC) saw its six-game winning streak snapped by No. 5 Georgia (31-9, 12-5 SEC),5-3, in a game that featured a pair of lengthy delays. First pitch started 75 minutes late because of rain in the area, pushing the start time from 6 p.m. to 7:15 p.m.
Georgia starter Dylan Vigue dominated Arkansas’ lineup through 2 scoreless innings, striking out 4 on 38 pitches. Vigue left with Georgia head coach Wes Johnson and an athletic trainer after attempting to come back out to start the bottom of the third.
Because of how effective Vigue was early in the game, Georgia did not have anyone in the bullpen when Vigue sustained the injury. Pitchers are allowed as much time as needed when a player is removed from the game. Caden Aoki took over 15 minutes to go through a warmup routine before play resumed.
Arkansas bats did not have much more success against Aoki. Aoki pitched 5 innings in relief on 102 pitches, allowing just 2 earned runs. Working around 5 walks, Aoki retired 15 of the 24 batters he faced and allowed his pair of earned runs on a bloop and a blast. The home run at the time cut the Georgia lead from 4-0 to 4-2.Â
Camden Kozeal dumped a single to lead off the sixth before Damian Ruiz hit his first home run since returning from injury.Â
Georgia came into the game with 102 home runs, the most in the nation and nearly double the number of the Razorbacks (54). Georgia added two more solo home runs. Henry Allen hit a 477-foot home run to open the scoring in the second off starter Cole Gibler. The 477-foot homer is longer than any home run hit by a Razorback player in at least the last two seasons.Â
Ryan Lujo hit a home run for an insurance run in the seventh.Â
The Bulldogs got plenty of hard contact off Gibler, tagging him for 7 hits across 5+ innings of work and 4 runs. Tate McGuire and Steele Eaves combined for 4 innings of one-run relief.Â
Arkansas brought the tying run to the plate in both the seventh and the eighth inning after scoring a gift run on a wild pitch. Nolan Souza lined out the second baseman Ryan Winn, who leaped up to catch the ball and retire the side.Â
The Razorbacks got the tying run back to the plate in a two-run game in the eighth but Reese Robinett struck out on 3 pitches and TJ Pompey flew out to center to end the threat.
Georgia and Arkansas settle the series in a rubber match 1 p.m. Saturday. The game will be streamed on SEC Network+.Â
