Cal has announced the hiring of offensive coordinator Jordan Somerville as the next offensive coordinator in Berkeley. It is the first announced hiring under new head coach Tosh Lupoi.

Somerville heads to the Bears after three seasons in the NFL. He has served as assistant quarterbacks coach and pass game specialist for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers since the 2023 season.

The 29-year-old assistant has not been a play-caller previously in his career, but he does have experience at the college level. Prior to his stint with the Buccaneers, Somerville was an offensive analyst at Oregon.

An Arizona State alum, he worked with current Sun Devils head coach Kenny Dillingham while in Eugene during the 2022 season. Somerville was able to work closely with current Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix while with the Ducks.

Nix passed for just under 3,600 yards and 29 touchdowns during that season at Oregon. Lupoi was on staff with the Ducks as defensive coordinator at that time.

In addition to serving as a student assistant and graduate assistant at ASU, Somerville earned his first full-time position at New Mexico beginning in 2020. He worked as the running backs coach and recruiting coordinator for the the Lobos over two seasons before making his way to Eugene.

Somerville has earned a reputation as a high-level recruiter during his time in college. Lupoi highlighted how important recruiting and ā€œtalent acquisitionā€ will be for the Bears in his tenure as head coach.

Somerville is first official piece of Lupoi’s staff

Cal is expected to retain current interim head coach and senior offensive assistant Nick Rolovich under Lupoi. Rolovich is in line to take over as quarterbacks coach and assistant head coach moving into the 2026 season.

The Bears are also reportedly set to bring in Michigan State assistant Keith Bhonapha as running backs coach as part of the staff under Somerville.
