Kansas head coach Bill Self will be back on the practice court Thursday and is feeling good after a minor health scare, he said on his weekly radio show Wednesday night. Self missed Kansas’ last game on Tuesday against Colorado.

“Right before our team was taking off I started feeling some very abnormal chest issues,” Self said. “And I’m thinking, based off what I’ve had before, this can’t be good. So I go down and get looked at and everything and of course they’re getting ready to get on the plane. So I told them, ‘Can I go.’ And they’re going, ‘No you can’t go.’ Because I was experiencing some stuff.

“Come to find out, I was not severely, but very dehydrated and I’ve got AFib. So I just had a bout with that that was pretty significant in a pretty small snippet of time. But it was enough that I couldn’t get on a plane.”

Prior to this season in July, Self was admitted to the hospital to undergo a procedure where he had two stents inserted in his heart. He also missed the Big 12 and NCAA Tournament in 2023 after being hospitalized because of chest tightness.

“I’ve been checked out thoroughly and actually feel good,” Self said. “I was kind of relieved to know that it was what it was to be honest with you. So I’m good to go, no limitations. I could coach today. I could’ve coached last night. They just didn’t want me flying and being in altitude there. But certainly will be back on the practice court tomorrow without question.”

During the 75-69 win over Colorado, Kansas’ star freshman guard Darryn Peterson rolled his left ankle early in the second half and was in and out of the lineup down the stretch.

Self updated his status on Wednesday as well: “That was a pretty severe turn, as evidence by how he’s walking today or lack there of and everything. So he finished the game, but he couldn’t move hardly.”

“He didn’t feel very good. So I was really happy and proud of him for contributing in the way he did. I know he earned some cred with his teammates last night because they saw it was puffed up pretty good.”

Self did not say what Peterson’s status would be for Kansas State on Saturday. He’ll speak to the media on Thursday.

“[Peterson’s] not going to be 100% for a while, so he’s going to have to learn to deal with that,” Self said.
