The Field of 68 will unveil a series through January in which we’ll rank the jobs in every league from top to bottom – and will do it by anonymously polling veteran coaches (head coaches and assistants) in each conference.

There are no specific parameters. Each coach was able to utilize their own specific parameters to determine their list from top to bottom.

However, while recruiting base and facilities were a major factor when I did a similar exercise in 2018, now it’s obviously financial resources (NIL) that are paramount.

Here’s the daily order thus far:

BIG WEST JOB RANKINGS:

1. UC Santa Barbara – 166 (8)
2. UC San Diego – 158 (4)
3. Hawaii – 142 (4)
4. UC Irvine – 132
5. UC Davis – 106
6. Long Beach State – 104
7. Cal Poly – 70
8. Cal State Northridge – 68
9. Cal State Fullerton – 46
10. UC Riverside – 38
11. Cal State Bakersfield – 28

WHY IS SANTA BARBARA THE BEST JOB?

“NIL and rev share money. It also has support from the community at games, facilities, location. But 90 percent of it is because it can offer more money to kids in recruiting.”

“The job with the most resources in this era of college basketball should be considered the best job. When you combo that with a great location it puts you on the top and right now, that’s why Santa Barbara is considered the best job.”

“Location and resources, they have a huge NIL pot to get players, they can get anyone admitted to school, there is a genuine care and concern to do whatever it takes to give themselves a chance to win. Not sure what the number is but I know they buy quite a few teams and again having the resources and mindset to get that done helps UCSB be at the top of this conference.”

WHY IS UC SAN DIEGO SUCH A GOOD JOB?

“The President cares about winning and elevating the University’s perception through men’s basketball’s success, they are flush with student fees, and there’s incredible potential for program growth and investment in their roster and staff.”

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE HAWAII AT 1?

“Biggest arena, essentially the professional team of the islands, and treated as such. Can recruit anywhere in the world. Only program with FBS football which I guess could be argued as positive or negative, but goes to the commitment to athletics.”

“Money. Arena. Practice facility high major. Fans.”

WHY IS FULLERTON ONE OF THE TOUGHEST?

“No resources, no budget and lack of care towards athletics, especially men’s basketball.”
