Elmhurst(Ill.) IC Catholic Prep junior defensive tackle recruit Joshua Shaw Jr.  (6-foot-3, 300 pounds) decided on Sunday to wrap up his recruiting process and gave in-state Northern Illinois University his verbal commitment. Shaw Jr. who added an offer from the NIU Huskies staff a week ago breaks down his college decision here.

“I was able to just give everything some serious thought over the last week or so,” Shaw Jr. said. “My visit last week to NIU was great and it’s such a comfortable feeling to have found the right place for me. I feel great about my commitment to NIU and so does my family.”

Breaking down his decision process

Shaw Jr. discussed why he decided to give the NIU Huskies his early commitment .

“The coaches at NIU are genuine people who have been making me feel wanted and like a priority for them. Coach (Rob) Harley and the entire coaching staff just work so well together and are just great guys and the type of coaches I want to play for in college. NIU already does a great job of development and I feel they can help me get to where I want to go in college then after college. NIU is also pretty close to home. Distance wasn’t really a thing for me and honestly early on I wanted to leave the state. It just worked out that the school I decided on happens to be close to home. NIU recruited me as a defensive tackle.”

Why make his college decision still relatively early this spring?

“NIU is just a comfort feeling for me. It’s a great feeling knowing I have a coaching staff and a community who believes in me and has my back. The decision process is now behind me and I can just focus on my game and on my team this summer. It’s a big weight off my shoulders to make a decision and iit’s a great feeling.”

Bringing quite a bit to DeKalb

So what does Joshua Shaw Jr. bring to the NIU Huskies football program.

“I will bring leadership and a dog mentality every day. Going hard on every play and I also feel I bring a high football IQ. I have a great passion for the game and I’m excited to learn more every day at NIU.”

Joshua Shaw Jr.is now the second known verbal commitment to Northern Illinois University joining Lockport DT Cornell Bass in the Huskies Class of 2027.
