Tyler Roehl is returning to Iowa State as offensive coordinator after spending one season with the Detroit Lions.

Roehl, who served as the Cyclones’ assistant head coach and running backs coach during Iowa State’s record-setting 2024 season, will remain with the Lions through their final game, including the NFL playoffs if applicable. He coached Detroit’s tight ends this season.

A native of West Fargo, North Dakota, Roehl helped Iowa State to an 11-3 record in 2024, a Big 12 Championship Game appearance and a Pop-Tarts Bowl victory. The Cyclones finished the season ranked No. 15 nationally.

Iowa State head coach Jimmy Rogers said Roehl’s competitive nature and offensive approach made him a natural fit.

“I’ve competed against Tyler, I’ve coached against him,” Rogers said. “He’s the ultimate competitor. His offenses are known for creativity, innovation and toughness.”

Roehl and Rogers crossed paths as players and coaches while at North Dakota State and South Dakota State, respectively.

At Iowa State in 2024, Roehl oversaw a rushing attack that produced 27 touchdowns — tied for the fourth-most in school history — and totaled 2,247 yards, an increase of 688 yards from the previous season. The Cyclones averaged 31.1 points per game, the fifth-best mark in program history, and 416.2 yards per game.

Running back Carson Hansen rushed for 13 touchdowns, becoming the first Iowa State non-quarterback outside of NFL standouts David Montgomery and Breece Hall to reach double-digit rushing scores since 2005.

With the Lions this season, Roehl coached tight ends Sam LaPorta and Brock Wright, who combined for 54 receptions, 597 yards and five touchdowns with two regular-season games remaining.

Roehl joined Iowa State in 2024 after being named Tennessee State’s associate head coach and offensive coordinator, though he did not coach a game there. Before that, he spent 11 seasons at North Dakota State, including five as offensive coordinator.

During his time with the Bison, Roehl won seven FCS national championships and eight Missouri Valley Football Conference titles. As offensive coordinator, NDSU reached three national title games and won championships in 2019 and 2021. In 2023, the Bison led the nation in rushing yards, rushing touchdowns and total touchdowns.

Roehl coached five FCS All-Americans and 11 all-conference players. In 2019, quarterback Trey Lance won the Walter Payton Award as NDSU fielded one of the nation’s most explosive offenses.

Roehl was named to the American Football Coaches Association’s 35 Under 35 Coaches Leadership Institute in 2020.

A former standout running back at North Dakota State, Roehl rushed for 2,512 career yards and earned two CSC Academic All-America honors. He signed with the Seattle Seahawks as an undrafted free agent in 2009.

Roehl earned his bachelor’s degree from NDSU in 2009 and a master’s degree in 2014.
