California is loaded with elite talent in the 2027 recruiting cycle
Many continue to question California’s spot on the mantle of states that produce the most high school football talent. It’s been a fair examination at times, but the 2027 cycle looks like a loaded one in the Golden State.
As of April 27, California is home to 32 blue-chip prospects, according to the Rivals Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all major recruiting media companies. That includes nine top-100 recruits.
Below is a look at the top 2027 prospects in California early on in the cycle:
1. CB Donte Wright — Georgia commit
School: Long Beach Poly
Rivals Industry Ranking: No. 8 NATL. (No. 2 CB)
Georgia has hung onto a commitment from Wright since last June, but Oregon and Miami have been pushing for a flip for some time. Now a five-star, he’s taking visits to all three schools and is working towards a final decision.
“I’m at the hardest point of my recruiting right now,” Wright recently told Rivals’ Adam Gorney. “It’s hard to decide what I want to do. I’m trying to talk to my family and loved ones and people who are closest to me and get their opinions about things and see how things go.”
2. ATH Honor Fa’alave-Johnson — USC commit
School: Cathedral Catholic
Rivals Industry Ranking: No. 18 NATL. (No. 1 ATH)
Fa’alave-Johnson locked in with the in-state Trojans last month. He’s a true do-it-all athlete on the football field and could play running back or defensive back at the next level. He was previously listed as a safety but now ranks as an athlete. USC was at the top of his recruitment for some time and he now headlines the haul for Lincoln Riley and Co.
3. DL Marcus Fakatou
School: Orange Lutheran
Rivals Industry Ranking: No. 27 NATL. (No. 2 DL)
The 6-foot-7, 295-pounder reclassified from the 2028 cycle and instantly slots in as one of the nation’s best in the 2027 class. He plays for a top program in the state and has his choice of elite college programs. Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oregon, Michigan and Texas are all in the mix. The Fighting Irish currently have the edge in the Rivals RPM.
4. DL Myels Smith — Texas A&M commit
School: Inglewood
Rivals Industry Ranking: No. 53 NATL. (No. 4 DL)
Smith has been a member of Texas A&M’s top-ranked recruiting class since Dec. 21 and his stock has only been on the rise since. Checking in at 6-foot-4.5 and 300 pounds, Smith could be the nose tackle of the future in College Station. He had 91 total tackles last season and is primed for a huge senior campaign this fall.
5. DL Kasi Currie
School: Sierra Canyon
Rivals Industry Ranking: No. 57 NATL. (No. 5 DL)
Currie has continued to take visits to his top contenders this spring and a crucial string of official visits is now on deck. He’ll get back to Georgia, Texas, Oregon, Cal and Ohio State across the next couple months as he works toward a decision. The Longhorns and Buckeyes have been frequently mentioned atop Currie’s recruitment.
6. WR Quentin Hale — USC commit
School: Centennial
Rivals Industry Ranking: No. 62 NATL. (No. 12 WR)
The 6-foot-3 pass-catcher is transferring to Centennial for his senior season next fall. He tallied 12 touchdowns as a junior and has continued to see his stock rise as an elite receiver. USC prioritized the pass-catcher and Hale joined the Trojans’ class on Feb. 20. Oklahoma, Texas and Nebraska were other programs in pursuit.
7. CB Juju Johnson
School: Long Beach Poly
Rivals Industry Ranking: No. 69 NATL. (No. 9 CB)
Johnson and Wright form the best defensive back duo in the nation for the Jackrabbits in Long Beach. The 5-foot-10, 160-pound Johnson could be eyeing a different destination than his teammate. Oklahoma continues to trend heavily in the Rivals RPM. Miami, Cal, UCLA and the Sooners have all locked in official visits with the blue-chipper.

8. CB Danny Lang — USC commit
School: Mater Dei
Rivals Industry Ranking: No. 70 NATL. (No. 10 CB)
Originally a safety at the high school level, Lang has now transitioned to cornerback and he’s one of the best in the cycle. He plays for one of, if not the most notable high school program in the nation. He’s also slated to be the next Monarch to make the move to Los Angeles to play for USC. He committed at the end of March but is slated to take official visits to Auburn and Oregon, in addition to the Trojans.
9. LB Taven Epps — Oklahoma commit
School: Tustin
Rivals Industry Ranking: No. 90 NATL. (No. 5 LB)
Previously ranked as an EDGE, Epps is now considered a linebacker ahead of his senior season. The 6-foot-4, 235-pounder is one of three Golden State blue-chippers that’s committed to Oklahoma. Epps chose Brent Venables and the Sooners on Jan. 10 and he’s rock-solid with the SEC program entering the summer.
10. OT Drew Fielder — USC commit
School: Servite
Rivals Industry Ranking: No. 120 NATL. (No. 11 OT)
Oregon originally won out for the 6-foot-6, 270-pounder, but Fielder has family ties to USC, and once he landed an offer from the Trojans, it felt inevitable that he’s wind up in Los Angeles. After taking a couple of visits to campus, he flipped on March 28. His stock is also on the rise ahead of his senior season.
“Fielder has the look of a high-upside developmental offensive tackle. He has really put on impressive size and mass over the past year,” Rivals’ Charles Power recently wrote. “A one-time tight end who has converted to offensive tackle, he moves really well and just has a lot of projectable tools for the position, and I think we view him as having a high upside.”
