Steelers WR DK Metcalf punches fan during Week 16 game vs. Lions
Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver DK Metcalf punched a fan during the Week 16 road game against the Detroit Lions. Metcalf’s altercation with the fan came during the second quarter.
Metcalf was not ejected from the game. Shortly after the incident, CBS Sports sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson provided a report on what led to the punch.
“I was watching it, and he came over because the fan in the stands was holding a four Pittsburgh jersey. He went over and the fan said something to him. Obviously, Metcalf did not like what he said, and you saw the swipe there,” Wolfson said. “No Steelers came over to him and mentioned anything. We’ll see if the league takes action.”
DK Metcalf could face discipline from NFL for punching fan
Why was Metcalf allowed to continue playing? CBS Sports rules analyst Gene Steratore explained why on the broadcast.
“On this situation, because the officials did not see this and wouldn’t expect them to where DK Metcalf was, it’s not something they can weigh into from an officiating standpoint,” Steratore said.

Metcalf, however, could face discipline from the NFL. The league will, at the very least, take a look at it.
“I have been notified, though, that will be delivered to compliance with the NFL, and they’ll address it at that point,” Steratore said.
A potential suspension for Metcalf at this point in the season would be highly detrimental to the Steelers. Pittsburgh, at 8-6, continues to hold a one-game lead over the Baltimore Ravens for first place in the AFC North. They need everyone at their best — including Metcalf.
Metcalf, in his first season with the Steelers, leads the team in receiving. He entered Sunday’s game with 55 receptions for 808 yards and six touchdowns.
The Steelers and Lions are tied at 10 at the half. Metcalf has just one catch for five yards.
