Sean Payton sounds like he does not want to lose his top assistant, Davis Webb. The passing game coordinator for the Denver Broncos interviewed for the Las Vegas Raiders head coaching job this week.

“Well, it would be a pain in the ass for him,” Payton said. Of course, he said in jest.

Webb is now drawing interest in other offensive coordinator jobs, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Not only that, Webb interviewed for the Buffalo Bills’ head coaching job, before the Bills promoted OC Joe Brady.

“After Broncos passing game coordinator and QB coach Davis Webb interviewed this week for the Raiders and Bills head coaching jobs, he received interview requests for offensive coordinator jobs with the Eagles, Giants, and Ravens,” Schefter wrote on Twitter. However, no movement has been made on that front for Webb.

Payton really doesn’t want to lose him considering Denver fired offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi. The move came after the Broncos scored seven points in the loss to the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship game on Sunday.

It’s not clear why the Broncos fired Lombardi since Payton calls the offensive plays. Lombardi joined the Broncos’ coaching staff in 2023, the same year Payton was named head coach.

Before joining the Broncos, Lombardi was the offensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Chargers (2021-2022). Before that, the 54-year-old was part of Payton’s coaching staff in New Orleans, serving as a quarterbacks coach from 2016 to 2020. That was Lombardi’s second stint with Payton and the Saints, as his first was from 2007 to 2013, and he worked as an offensive assistant and quarterbacks coach. In 2014, Lombardi left New Orleans to be the offensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions for two seasons.

Webb began his coaching career in 2023 with the Broncos as the QBs coach, staying in that role for two years. Payton promoted him to offensive pass game coordinator this past season and now he’s drawing more interest for his work with quarterback Bo Nix, despite the latter’s season-ending injury prior to the AFC Championship.

Webb played in the NFL from 2017-22 with the New York Giants, Jets and Buffalo Bills. He finished his career 23-of-40 passing for 168 yards, one touchdown and zero picks. He also ran for a touchdown.

A third round pick out of Cal in 2017, Webb played for Texas Tech for three seasons before spending his final year out west. During his final year, Webb threw for 4,295 yards, 37 touchdowns, 12 interceptions and a 61.6% completion percentage. In total, he had 9,852 yards, 83 touchdowns, 34 interceptions and a 61.5% completion percentage.
