Russell Wilson could be returning to the AFC for the 2026 NFL season. According to Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic, Wilson visited the New York Jets on Tuesday, and he is being considered as the backup quarterback to Geno Smith.

Rosenblatt said that the Jets had conversations with Russell Wilson before the NFL Draft and scheduled a visit after the draft to allow the team to focus on the draft process. It was also reported that Smith enjoyed working with Wilson when they were with the Seattle Seahawks in 2020-21. At that time, Wilson was the starter, and Smith backed Wilson up.

Wilson spent time with the Giants in 2025 and played in six games with three starts. In those six games, the former Wisconsin star completed 58% of his passes for 831 yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions.

The Seahawks selected Wilson in the third round of the 2012 NFL Draft. He was with the team for 10 seasons and had a successful run, being named to the Pro Bowl nine times, selected to the All-Pro Second Team in 2019, and led the Seahawks to two Super Bowl appearances and one Super Bowl win.

Will Russell Wilson join a revamped Jets QB room?

In 2022, the Seahawks traded Wilson to the Denver Broncos, and he then signed a five-year, $245 million contract extension. He was with the team for two seasons and compiled an 11-19 record during that span.

Following the 2023 season, the Broncos cut Wilson, and he signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers in March of 2024. In his one season in Pittsburgh, Wilson completed 63.7 percent of his passes for 2,482 yards, 16 touchdowns, and five interceptions.

If Wilson joins the Jets, he and Smith will lead a revamped QB room. New York also selected former Clemson QB Cade Klubnik in the fourth round of the draft, and the team also has Bailey Zappe and Brady Cook.

During the 2025 season, the Jets had Cook, Tyrod Taylor, and Justin Fields as their starting QBs. Fields started the majority of games (nine) and completed 62.7 percent of his passes for 1,259 yards, seven touchdowns, and one interception with a 2-7 record.
