According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Cleveland Browns are set to hire Todd Monken to be the franchise’s next head coach. Monken previously spent time as the Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator, a move now-former HC John Harbaugh made in 2023. Flash forward a few years and Monken is taking over the reins for the first time in the NFL.

“This will be Todd Monken’s first NFL head coaching opportunity,” Schefter said via X. “He previously served as a head coach at the college level from 2013-15 at Southern Miss. He was also the OC and QBs coach at Georgia from 2020–22, when the Bulldogs won two College Football Playoff National Championships.”

There is a decent mix of college and NFL experience for Monken. Cleveland is already familiar with him due to the 2019 season, when Monken served as the offensive coordinator. He worked with a young Baker Mayfield, finishing 22nd in points and yards on the season in the lone season of Freddie Kitchens being in charge.

A lot of success has come for Monken since then. As Schefter mentioned in his report, Georgia came calling to take over ahead of the 2020 season. Two national championships were won in three seasons spent in Athens. Stetson Bennett turned into a draft pick under Monken’s watch as well.

Monken then jumped back into the NFL to take over the Ravens’ offense. He inherited one of the best quarterbacks in football, Lamar Jackson. Personal awards have flown in for Jackson ever since, winning an MVP and being named a two-time first-team All-Pro. An injury kept Baltimore from fully finding its groove in 2025, eventually leading to a bunch of coaching changes.

The Browns are hoping Monken can bring similar results to whoever is considered the long-term quarterback there. Finding one has not been an easy task. Almost everyone knows about one fan’s jersey with the name of every starting quarterback on it. The list goes on and on, not really having any kind of consistency in the franchise.

In the short-term, finding a way to win games certainly will be a priority. Cleveland only has four winning seasons this century and three playoff appearances. The last came in 2020, taking down the rival Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC Wild Card Round. Monken will be hoping to bring a lot more success to a city desperate to see a consistently good football team.
