The entire football world is reacting to Bill Belichick not being elected into the Pro Football Hall of Fame as a first-ballot candidate. Many are quite upset with the decision, as Belichick did not receive the required 40 out of 50 votes. Even current players appear to be in shock.

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is one of them. Mahomes took to social media on Tuesday evening, calling the decision from voters “insane.”

“Insane…,” Mahomes said via X. “Don’t even understand how this could be possible.”

Mahomes and Belichick faced off on five occasions, one of which was in the playoffs. New England hosted the 2018 AFC Championship game, an overtime thriller between the two. It turned into the last Super Bowl won by the legendary combination of Belichick and quarterback Tom Brady. Once those two separated, Mahomes really saw his career begin to take off, as far as winning championships.

So, as somebody who directly went head-to-head against Belichick, Mahomes is confused about how the Patriots’ head coach is not on his way to Canton. You have to assume Belichick will get there one day, no matter how long delay the process. Another easy belief might be that Mahomes getting into the Pro Football Hall of Fame as well.

Mahomes will focus on rehabbing his knee injury for the time being. But he is never afraid to comment on what’s currently happening in the world of sports, let alone the NFL. He joins thousands of others stunned by Tuesday’s news.

Scandals surrounding Bill Belichick kept him out of Pro Football Hall of Fame, for now

According to ESPN’s Seth Wickersham, voters kept two scandals surrounding Belichick — Spygate and Deflategate — when making their decision. Wickersham even says former Indianapolis Colts general manager Bill Polian may have influenced them as well.

“Multiple sources told ESPN that Spygate and Deflategate, the twin cheating scandals during the Patriots’ championship run, came up in deliberations among voters,” Wickersham said. “A voter who spoke on condition of anonymity said that Polian, an ardent Kraft supporter and former general manager of the Buffalo Bills and Indianapolis Colts — a chief Patriots rival during their dynasty — told some voters he believed Belichick should ‘wait a year’ before induction as penance for Spygate, the 2007 cheating scandal that cost the team a first-round draft pick. Commissioner Roger Goodell also fined the Patriots $500,000 and fined Belichick $250,000.”
