Report: Miami Dolphins releasing wide receiver Tyreek Hill
The marriage between Tyreek Hill and the Dolphins is over. According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the star wide receiver is being released by Miami.
Hill underwent successful reconstructive surgery on his injured knee last season, and he’s currently in the recovery process. The 31-year-old dislocated his left knee and suffered damage to multiple ligaments, including a torn ACL.
His agent Drew Rosenhaus previously told ESPN’s Adam Schefter that Hill “will play next season,” with the “realistic goal” being a return by the start of 2026. Evidently, it won’t be in Miami, though.
Moreover, Hill sustained the gruesome injury during a win over the New York Jets for the Dolphins, leaving the field on a cart before being hospitalized overnight. In true Hill fashion, he was smiling and joking with teammates on his way off, which former Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel later praised.
“It hasn’t been deemed to be anything beyond this surgery, and we’re very hopeful for it to turn out well,” McDaniel said, per Pro Football Talk. “It’s just executing this procedure and seeing what happens from there.”
At the time, CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones reported that Hill might’ve played his final down for the Dolphins, as Miami could release Hill before the start of the 2026 league year, citing the structure of his contract. He’s been proven right.
“An outright release before the start of the 2026 league year was always on the table regardless of injury,” Jones wrote. Hill’s deal, which is currently a three-year extension worth $90 million, carries a massive $52 million cap hit during the final year. However, none of that money is guaranteed in the event of injury.

League sources reportedly told Jones they believe it’s “next to impossible” for Miami to have kept Hill on the roster by March 2026. That’s when $16 million in salary and bonuses would’ve become guaranteed, if he was still under contract. His extension ultimately pays out $52.6 million over two years, with the final season viewed as “mostly cosmetic,” per Jones.
All told, Hill is remaining optimistic about his future. Despite the uncertainty he’s been faced with he shared a heartfelt message with fans from his hospital bed before his aforementioned surgery.
“Keep your boy in your prayers. You guys have been awesome. Fins Nation, just the whole entire NFL have been amazing, sending me lots of love, lots of prayers. I’m absolutely honored, granted the situation,” Hill stated. “I love you guys so much, and hope to see you soon.”
In four games in 2025, Hill recorded 21 catches for 265 yards and a touchdown. His absence left a massive hole in Miami’s offense — not just then, but for their future. We’ll see what the coming year holds for the star wide receiver, but his time with the Dolphins is done.
