The Miami Dolphins are hitting the reset button this offseason with a change in head coach. Now, there’s also a major question about the future of quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who had once been seen as the team’s franchise quarterback.

2025 was the second season in a row where the Dolphins failed to make the postseason. That came as Tagovailoa seemed to regress as a passer. He completed just 67.7 percent of his passes, the worst mark he had since 2022. Meanwhile, his 15 interceptions were the most of any individual season of his career. That’s something he managed in just 14 games.

Despite those questions about his future, Miami GM Jon-Eric Sullivan was cryptic about his quarterback. He said, “Today is not the day” to figure out the quarterback position.

Sullivan would later expand on that. He admitted the Dolphins do need to figure out their future at the quarterback position. They just have to do it the right way.

“Yes, we need to get the QB situation in place,” Sullivan said. “But we’re not gonna do it in an irresponsible manner where we sacrifice building the infrastructure of this football team.”

Tua Tagovailoa would play the first 14 games of the 2025 season, before being benched for backup quarterback Quinn Ewers. That only came after the Dolphins were eliminated from playoff contention. In his own brief period of time playing, Ewers completed 66.3 percent of his passes for 622 yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions.

Beyond his play on the field, there have been other concerns about Tagovailoa. In particular, injuries have mounted for him and he’s struggled to stay on the field at times during his career.

In July of 2024, Tagovailoa signed a four-year, $212.4 million contract extension. That was designed to keep him with the Dolphins through the 2028 season. At the time, it made sense. In 2022 and 2023, he led the Dolphins to the playoffs. He was also a Pro Bowl selection who led the NFL in passing yards during the 2023 season.

Earlier in January, Tua Tagovailoa seemed prepared for a fresh start away from the Dolphins. There, he’d have the opportunity to hit the reset button on his career.

“That would be dope,” Tagovailoa said. “I would be good with it.”

The Miami Dolphins currently hold the 11th pick in the NFL Draft. Whether they use that on a quarterback, look for a new quarterback in free agency or a trade, or bring back Tagovailoa remains to be seen.
