Justin Herbert injury update: Chargers reveal QB's status after undergoing hand surgery
Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert underwent successful surgery Monday in Los Angeles to stabilize a fracture in his left hand, the team announced. He is considered day-to-day.
The Chargers host the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 14 next Monday. Herbert’s status for that game will be determined later in the week.
Herbert sustained the injury in the first quarter of Sunday’s 31-14 Week 13 home win over the Las Vegas Raiders. Raiders safety Jeremy Chinn hit Herbert on a scramble. Chinn’s helmet connected directly with Herbert’s hand. Herbert initially stayed in the game before exiting. He missed nine plays before returning. Herbert said after the game he didn’t expect to miss any time.
“I’m treating it as if I’m playing on Monday,” Herbert said. “I think they were very hopeful for that. I think that’s something that we’ll see [Monday] and we’ll get a feel for. I think they were very hopeful so that’s always a good thing.”
Justin Herbert’s status unclear after undergoing surgery
Herbert, 27, has thrown for 2,842 yards, 21 touchdowns and 10 interceptions on 66.9% passing. The Chargers are 8-4, the No. 5 seed in the AFC. If Herbert can’t play against the Eagles, Trey Lance will get his first start in a Charger uniform. Lance has appeared in three games this season, completing 7-of-13 passes for 90 yards.

Playing through injuries is nothing new for Herbert. He previously played through a broken finger on his left hand during the 2023 season.
“I think in terms of experience, I’ve gone through similar things,” Herbert said. “I think that will be helpful. At the end of the day just have to go out there and make sure everything is good, you’re comfortable.
“… As long as the trainers and doctors are feeling that it’s safe to return to play, I trust those guys completely.”
